“I’m less concerned about having to prove to people that something is synthetic. What I’m more concerned about is how we prove to people that something is real,” Imogen Piper, a visual-forensics reporter for the Washington Post, told us. cjr.org/feature/the-future-o…

Exclusive: Mysterious strikes targeting multiple fishing boats near the Galapagos were part of a covert CIA program. We found a surveillance plane, departing El Salvador, flew toward the three vessels on the day and days leading up to their disappearance.

On arrival, radio comms show the pilot – who spoke English with an American accent – agreeing to follow a vehicle to the military area of the airport. Flight tracking data and subsequent satellite imagery confirmed the plane's location there. (Image: Planet)

This was a huge undertaking, spanning months. It was a honor to work alongside such talented colleagues: @nakashimae @schmidtsam7 @samueloakford @wstrobel @AlexHortonTX @aaronjschaffer !

The three small fishing boats did not appear in regular AIS ship tracking data. So we mapped out their known paths leading up to their disappearance using Vessel Monitoring System data, which is used by Government regulators or fisheries authorities to track fishing.

It's a bit unfortunate how the coolest OSINT research often tends to be the hardest to write up.

How are backdoor arrangements keeping sanctioned oil moving despite a naval blockade? A new piece by @washingtonpost, featuring Windward intelligence, reveals how dark fleet tankers are rerouting thousands of miles to Indonesia to conduct covert ship-to-ship transfers. As our Senior Analyst @Michellewb_ notes in the report: “Ultimately, the longer the blockade is in place, the fewer cargos that Iran has in place to ship.” Read it here: okt.to/b5XnuN

Thousands of miles from the U.S. blockade line, near a cluster of islands called the Riau Archipelago, Iranian oil continues to flow in ship-to-ship transfers. Read my new investigation here wapo.st/42psxVo

Around 42 million barrels of Iranian oil remain floating on tankers near the Riau Archipelago, down from almost 90 million in early February, according to the global intelligence firm @Kpler : “The volumes are there for now. The replenishment is not”

The Riau Archipelago, strategically located between the Middle East and China, has long been a waypoint where vessels stealthily transfer oil to obscure its origins. To get there, ships usually sail through the Strait of Malacca, a narrow waterway between Malaysia and Indonesia.

Bravo to @hannah_natanson, whose Pulitzer Prize reporting overcame an outrageous and chilling FBI raid on her home, a threat to journalism in this country

Private satellite imaging companies are restricting access to imagery over Iran, making it difficult to verify destruction caused by U.S./Israeli strikes. I developed a method to detect building damage in open source radar imagery, now peer reviewed: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

To reiterate this point, the IRGC's intelligence unit has published two videos today in which they arrest several Iranians for filming and sharing videos of US/Israeli strikes from the windows of their homes. Open source investigators have a moral duty to protect Iranians who are trying to document this conflict despite knowing the potential risk to their safety. Please refrain from posting the POV coordinates of videos filmed from Iranian homes that could reveal people's addresses. The coordinates you post might be later used by the government to find and arrest people.
A kind note to fellow open source researchers: Do not post the coordinates of videos from Iran that reveal the home addresses of people, particularly if they're chanting anti-government slogans or showing dissent. It could put them at risk of being identified and detained.

This investigation from @OCCRP, published a few weeks ago, uncovered how a person running two UK-registered crypto exchanges was actually a fake front linked to laundering for Iran's regime. One of the links in the investigation relied on facial matching a cat. Brilliant.
