Mehbooba Mufti Has Become Congress’s Mouthpiece : AIP Srinagar, October 27: Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi on Tuesday questioned PDP President Mehbooba Mufti’s praise of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi on Accession Day, asking how she could celebrate their legacy while overlooking decisions taken during their tenures that profoundly altered Jammu and Kashmir’s political position. “Mehbooba Mufti Sahiba must explain which Congress and which legacy she is celebrating. Has she forgotten that Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was arrested in 1953 during Jawaharlal Nehru’s premiership? This remains one of the most consequential episodes in Kashmir’s political history. Praising Nehru without acknowledging what happened to Sheikh Abdullah is a selective reading of history,” Inam said. He also questioned the changes in Jammu and Kashmir’s administrative system and the growing control of the Centre over its affairs during Indira Gandhi’s tenure. “Before praising Indira Gandhi, Mehbooba Mufti must answer what happened to the institutions that once distinguished Jammu and Kashmir’s political status. What does she have to say about the replacement of Sadr-i-Riyasat with a centrally appointed Governor and Wazir-e-Azam with Chief Minister, alongside the growing role of the central administrative machinery, including the posting of IAS officers? If she wants to celebrate Indira Gandhi’s legacy, she must confront these historical decisions instead of conveniently overlooking them. The people of Jammu and Kashmir have every right to ask which legacy she is defending and what it meant for their political identity and autonomy,” Inam said. Inam also referred to the remark attributed to Indira Gandhi that the clock could not be turned back, saying historical statements and decisions must be examined in their proper context rather than used selectively to suit present-day politics. “Mehbooba Mufti’s sudden praise of Congress leaders makes her increasingly appear to be a mouthpiece of the Congress. She cannot claim to defend Kashmir’s political interests while overlooking the record of the very leadership she is now applauding,” he added. Clarifying AIP’s position, Inam said questioning Congress’s past did not absolve the BJP of responsibility for its own decisions. “The BJP is equally answerable for its actions, particularly the changes imposed on Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019. AIP will neither whitewash Congress’s historical record nor give the BJP a free pass. Both parties must be held accountable for their respective decisions affecting Jammu and Kashmir,” he said. Inam said Kashmir’s history could not be rewritten to accommodate the political convenience of national parties. “If Mehbooba Mufti wants to speak about Nehru, Indira Gandhi and the promises made to Jammu and Kashmir, she must confront the complete historical record. Our people deserve political honesty, not selective memory.”

AIP has taken up the attack on Kashmiri passengers with Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini, demanding arrests, a time-bound probe, compensation for 4 injured persons and ₹7–8 lakh in estimated bus damage and accountability for any police lapse. Being Kashmiri is not a crime. No Kashmiri should have to fear for their life, dignity or livelihood anywhere in country.
