We all have our own experiences with AI and if we all looked in the mirror and answered a few questions we probably would all agree this is a tremendous risk, especially on the underdeveloped brain of children. And the long term affects are not analysed just yet of course.
With that said a study conducted by Nataliya Kosmyna at MIT’s Media Lab in 2025 involved 54 participants who wrote essays using ChatGPT, Google Search, or no tools (Brain-only). The results revealed that ChatGPT users had the lowest neural engagement and connectivity, while Brain-only users had the highest, and Search Engine users had moderate levels.
The study also found that LLM users had weaker critical thinking, memory, and linguistic skills compared to Brain-only users. Notably, 83% of LLM users were unable to quote their essays, indicating poor retention.
Interestingly, switching ChatGPT users to Brain-only tasks showed sustained low brain activity, while Brain-only users switching to ChatGPT showed improved recall.
These findings raise concerns about the potential impact of over-reliance on LLMs on cognitive development, particularly among young users. Researchers emphasise the need for caution in educational AI use to minimise these negative effects.
It’s important to note that the study is a preprint and has not been peer-reviewed. And of course the small sample size is also a factor…
