And this is what the site looked like, looking up at those beautiful #Pinuscembra stands growing in the cliffs overlooking the glacier... soulful place! #Chamonix #MontBlanc (2/)

Finding in situ (standing and rooted) #subfossil trees is quite rare in the Alps. Here is a fine example at #MerDeGlace. Lost in an ocean of precariously balanced building-sized boulders, 60m below the moraine crest... #TreeRingTuesday (1/)

Retreat of #MerDeGlace (aka 'Glacier des Bois') during the 1860s! 1861 | 1864 | 1869 We are here only few years after the end of the Little Ice Age (~1855 CE)! The maximum LIA frontal position reached in 1821 CE is located to the immediate right of the hamlet 'Les Bois'. (1/)

Thawing permafrost is increasingly triggering rockfalls in high alpine regions. Settlements and housing are threatened. Early detection systems could reduce the potential danger. innovationorigins.com/en/det… via @innoorigins

This is the first ever representation of a glacier advance 🏔️❄️ 'Deux vues du glacier des Bossons' by Jean-Antoine Linck Depicts a retreating (L.) and advancing (R.) #Bossons glacier tongue, most likely in the very early 19th century (Coll. H.J. Zumbühl) #Chamonix #Art #Science

Holy moly, this is one of the more incredible lightning plots I've ever seen. The spatial ring that forms after the initial plume eruption is something I've never seen before. Incredible imagery tonight coming from the #Tonga #Volvano eruption. 🌋

This is the #volcano eruption near #Tonga that has prompted a #Tsunami Advisory for the U.S. West Coast and #Hawaii. It occurred at 0410 UTC today, 1/15/22, and could be heard across the South Pacific and as far away as Alaska. re.ssec.wisc.edu/s/p27XYB

The wood was lying directly onto the glacier. As the original growth position is not known, we can only infer that a higher treeline (>2400 m!) prevailed at that time (3rd millenium BCE) on the slope above. This period is indeed known as one of the Holocene thermal optima 🌡️ (2/)

At 1.2°C of global warming, with current pace, we will hit 1.5°C in 2033 and 2°C by 2060. With last 7 years being warmest on record, 2021 among them, we have strong confirmation of the global climate crisis as shown in excellent analysis by @BerkeleyEarth berkeleyearth.org/global-tem…

Great new glacial geomorphology paper in the Black Forest (southern Germany) highlighting two Lateglacial advance/stillstands at 17-16 and 14 ka. This is really beautiful and chiselled artwork (look at those figures)!😍 Way to go Martin !!!👏 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

Neat study using the couple in situ 10Be-14C measured in bedrock to constraining the length of #Holocene glacier retreat in the Swiss Alps. #Stein glacier was similar or more retreated than its 2000 CE extent during ~7 ka, roughly placed between 10 and 3 ka 🔽

This is a shocking video of a massive flexural toppling failure at Canyons de Furnas in Brazil this morning. Three boats were reportedly affected. The outcome for the passengers is currently unclear.
