It tended to be older mothers that tended to put off pregnancy as a result of the Zika alert #insteadAL19
It took about 12 months after the public alert before the conception rates went back to normal rate #insteadAL19
Results show there was a significant drop in conception rates after the public alert over Zika #InsteadAL19
Cases of Microcephaly tended to be concentrated in the north east of Brazil #insteadAL
The policy responses was there was no government advice to the public to postpone pregnancy #InsteadAL19
The Zika virus was unique as one of the symptoms was microcephaly - where a new baby’s head was larger than normal #InsteadAL19
There was a negative impact of the ELA clubs were there was an increase in the amount of transactional sex among older girls #InsteadAL19
In villages were there were no ELA clubs there was an increase in unprotected sex and pregnancy #insteadAL19
The ‘ELA clubs’ reduce the amount of time that girls spend doing risky activities, such as spending more time with men involved in sexual activity #insteadAL19
The results of the intervention, the ‘Clubs’, is that they offset some of the disruption caused by the virus - for the younger girls under 17 #insteadAL19
The research then looks at the difference in disruption in villages that were less and more impacted by the virus #insteadAL19
Younger girls of 17 or less were more affected by the school closures, whereas girls older than 17 were more impacted in fewer work opportunities #insteadAL19
. @ImranRasul3 looks at an intervention known as Empowerment and Livelihoods for Adolescents (ELA) or a number of ‘clubs’ that were safe spaces for men and women during the crisis #insteadAL19
There was a loss of economic opportunity for men and women and girls were more affected by school closures as they have fewer years in school than boys. Also as girls weren’t in school they were more vulnerable to sexual abuse #insteadAL19
The policy response by Sierra Leone to the Ebola virus was to close borders, lock-down villages and schools were closed #InsteadAL19
The Ebola virus particularly affected Sierra Leone and is one of the worst countries in the world for gender inequality, it has the highest maternal mortality ratio in the world and one of the lowest number of health professionals. #InsteadAL19
