Ilya Salmanzadeh reveals he had considered using the “God is a woman” chorus for Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s joint album as Ariana Grande was “locked in” with Pharrell:
“It didn’t happen. Then, when we started again with Ari, we were thinking maybe it could be her singing the chorus, and we’d get a rap feature, but then when she heard the song, she was like, ‘No, we're writing this for me.’ I was like, ‘Okay, fine.’ She just wrote all the verses and the pre [chorus] and all those crazy harmonies that are in there. She did it all that day.”

ilya talks about working on ‘petal’ with ariana: “[she’s] fantastic. so with ‘petal’ it was another new adventure, because it was the first time it was just me and her locked in and just literally creating from scratch. it was a different process because before we would write together and she would record and I would comp. but with ‘eternal sunshine’ and ‘petal’, she would record vocals herself and fully comp, fully vocal produce. with ‘petal’ we would sit in the studio together, pick sounds, and fully sound design together. then she would take that idea, even pre-drums or anything, just like ‘okay, these are the chords, I love this’, then she would grab that and go to her room; and she would write fully like, melodies, harmonies and make amazing mock ups. then she would present it to me and if I liked it she would finish the writing and fully record it. then she would bring it back to the room and we would sit together and produce it together. that has been a very fun process”
