🔍 #TipTuesday | Inside IPON's Toolkit
Thinking about using a data set found on the Internet for machine learning purposes? 🤖 Before putting it to use, especially for business-critical purposes or to create downstream works, it's worth taking the time to investigate the data set in more detail.
⚠️ There is a lack of clarity around the scope of activities that could lead to liability (allegation of copyright infringement), and the liability can be severe.
💰 Monetary damages can be very significant, and businesses may also face equitable remedies, such as injunctions that impact the ability of a business to operate.
📊 Use of data sets of questionable or unverified provenance has led to various issues, and even data sets collected or referenced by reputable sources have been problematic.
✅ From a practical perspective, it is generally not safe to assume that the fair use / fair dealing exceptions would be applicable.

🤖 Advancing the future of autonomous technology.
Markham-based startup and IPON client @CyberworksInc, founded by Vivek Burhanpurkar, just secured a contract worth more than $1 million with Canada's @NationalDefence to supply and test its next-generation autonomous vehicles with the Canadian Armed Forces.
“Our team has spent decades deploying autonomous technology in environments where failure is not an option, from airports and hospitals to now defence applications.” –Vivek Burhanpurkar, Founder and CEO, CyberWorks Robotics
The agreement will see CyberWorks deliver its multi-role autonomous vehicles, which combine deterministic robotics and machine learning to support defence logistics, payload delivery and reconnaissance operations in complex environments.
This milestone highlights the growing impact of Canadian-made autonomous technologies and the role innovative companies like CyberWorks are playing in advancing mission-critical solutions.

Your insurance policy mentions intellectual property... but are you actually covered?
Not all IP risks are the same, and coverage for a copyright claim may look very different from coverage for a patent dispute. Before assuming you're protected, it's worth taking a closer look.
Our latest blog explores common misconceptions about IP insurance and shares five important questions every innovator should ask before an IP dispute occurs.

🌬️ Advancing the future of energy-efficient cooling.
Waterloo-based startup and IPON client Evercloak, led by Evelyn Allen, CEO and Co-Founder, is developing next-generation solutions for energy-efficient cooling through its innovative EverDROP™ dehumidification technology.
The company recently secured advisory services and up to nearly $2 million in funding through the @NRC_CNRC's Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) Clean Technology initiative to support the continued development and scale-up of the technology.
"Using Evercloak's advanced membrane technology, EverDROP™ removes moisture from air without the energy-intensive cooling and reheating used in conventional dehumidification. The result is a more efficient approach to humidity control with the potential to significantly reduce HVAC energy use."
As demand for energy-efficient cooling continues to rise, Evercloak's made-in-Ontario innovation has the potential to reduce energy use while helping create a more sustainable future.

This #TipTuesday, we're taking a look at protecting your data.
In today's knowledge economy, data can be one of your business's most valuable assets. Whether it's product testing data, experimental data, simulation data, customer data or derived data, these assets can have great commercial value and serve as a source of competitive advantage.
Data can also create potential new revenue streams through licensing opportunities. 💡
A challenge with protecting data is that traditional types of intellectual property rights do not map cleanly to data. That's why it's important to use overlapping layers of protection, including trade secrets, tort and contract rights.
