After my PhD in #AnimalWelfare I noticed that more could be done to bring the latest welfare research into animal industries, where it is needed most.
Check out my organisation Animal Welfare Expertise at animalwelfareexpertise.com, and feel free to share and give feedback!

My take on modern zoo welfare for of large-brained, social animals: veterinary & physiological needs should always be met first.
The next step is to ensure they have daily engaging, choice-filled opportunities in the 3 Pillars of positive welfare: Social, Enrichment & Training

Insightful @iwc_int data on cetacean #euthanasia allowed this valuable new paper by @RebeccaMBoys and colleagues at @MasseyUni. Also check out the second paper detailed on animal welfare science translation and applications by @izziclegg and colleagues.
Responding to stranded cetaceans is very difficult. New research from @MasseyUni underlines the importance of data gathering to ensure every intervention is based on scientific understanding and achieves the best welfare outcome for the animal. Read more: massey.ac.nz/massey/about-ma…

Willingness to participate in training was found to be a good predictor of early changes in dolphins' health status which means it might also serve as an overall welfare indicator, though more work needed to look for more direct link to affect #UFAW2021

First up at #UFAW2021 is @izziclegg who is discussing dolphin welfare and starts off with explaining the difference between qualitative and quantitative measures of affective states and how it could be done on a large scale across multiple dolphin facilities
Survey is closing at the end of this week- take 3 mins to submit your burning questions on dolphins in zoos!
Have you always had questions about how dolphins are kept in zoos and aquaria? 🐬
Or, if you’ve worked at one of these facilities, are there questions the public always ask?
We would greatly appreciate your time for a 5 min survey on this topic at surveymonkey.com/r/RBZGQSB

At @RSPCA_official we are struggling to understand how we can go from the groundbreaking animal welfare progress of the last few weeks - not least ending live exports and primates as pets - to signing a trade deal with Australia with no protections for animal welfare.
An awesome team to work with!!! Making such great progress 🙌

In 2018, the team observed a blue whale in the region: the largest mammal on Earth 🐋
Thank you to @izziclegg and Patagonia Projects for capturing this amazing footage 🎥💙
