If we look at Kathryn De Beger’s official statement given to the Thirlwall Inquiry, it offers a deeper, more personal insight into Lucy Letby’s character and state of mind. Working with Lucy personally over a significant length of time, De Beger was uniquely placed to build a far more realistic picture of her than distant criminal profiles could ever hope to offer.  De Beger notes that at no point did Lucy ever say anything that triggered safeguarding concerns or required reporting to seniors or the police. Instead, the records reveal a young woman grappling with profound bewilderment, struggling to comprehend why consultants like Ravi Jayaram and Stephen Brearey were accusing her, and expressing deep concern for how much the grieving parents must be suffering.  This clinical reality is mirrored directly in Lucy’s April 2017 emails, where she appears to be reaching out to a trusted figure for reassurance and containment. Writing that she felt she didn't "belong" anywhere, her messages lay bare acute trauma and agonising self-doubt: "I feel as though this must be my fault and maybe I have done something wrong to the babies and blame myself – do you think that’s normal?" This state of mind seems entirely consistent with what she appears to be expressing in the post-it notes, where conflicted declarations of guilt, fear, and innocence reflect an internal psychological collapse rather than any calculated admission.  This is such a stark contrast to the distant, cold, and unempathic criminal profiling, and instead reveals an isolated, overwhelmed young woman reaching out and cracking under the immense psychological weight of hostile accusations.
