As recreational and medical marijuana legalization sweeps across the United States, a major study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association provides a sobering warning about its potential cardiac health risks. Researchers analyzing survey data from nearly 435,000 American adults found that frequent cannabis use is strongly associated with an increased likelihood of suffering a heart attack or stroke. Crucially, this heightened risk remained significant even after accounting for traditional tobacco use, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and preexisting health conditions, establishing cannabis as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The findings indicate that daily cannabis users face a 25 percent higher chance of experiencing a heart attack and a 42 percent greater likelihood of a stroke compared to non-users. Even occasional consumption was linked to elevated cardiovascular risks, regardless of whether the drug was smoked, vaped, or consumed through edibles.
