This is additionality: "Energy firm secures $588m to build huge Texas solar farm for Microsoft" This is not: "AWS just dropped $650 million on a data center built next to a 2.5 gigawatt nuclear power station"

The US is not building enough interregional transmission because utility regulation provides the wrong incentives. Utilities dominate under the status quo and block attempts at changing the rules. We need FERC or Congress to press forward.

We just introduced the #ConnectTheGrid Act to connect Texas to neighboring electric grids & prevent mass power outages during winter storms & heat waves. 💡 I’m grateful for these Members of Congress & organizations who are supporting our bill! 🧵👇🏽

Solar production broke 16 GW for the first time ever in Texas today! A huge jump of ~10% compared to the previous all-time record in ERCOT. More records: gridstatus.io/records

If we don’t limit global warming then people from Florida will have to move to other state…. Is that what you want?

(3/6) after Finn, there is little doubt that ECOT is basically a dual peaking system with winter storms becoming the norm. ECOT models the impact of URI and Elliott, however their base winter scenario only considers normal conditions. Finn not topped until 2029 🤔

(5/6) I'm also extremely bullish on load growth - particularly in Texas. This forecast doesn't seem to factor in much. One example is electrifying load in the Permian. Even haircutting these numbers 50% were looking at ~4 GW in West Texas by 2030. ercot.com/files/docs/2023/03…

(6/6) ERCOT predicts quite a bit of energy (GWh) growth, however the system *should be* designed to meet the peak. If I was energy czar of ERCOT: 1) capacity market 2) aggressive DSR & efficiency (could see your -3GW then) 3) Realistic planning for climate change + transition

🧶E(R)COT Thread⬇️ (1/6) Spent some time digging into ERCOT's LTLF. tldr; 1. Calling them ECOT from now on - revoking reliability because the math ain't mathin' 2. Load forecasters have not come to grips with climate change (ercot.com/gridinfo/load/fore…)

(2/6) 1. Under their base scenario, 2024 peak demand will be ~82 GW, a 3 GW reduction from '23. I know what you're thinking and this isn't due to demand side response or price responsive load. If anyone thinks peak demand will be <83GW I have an ocean front property in AZ 4 you.

The data is in: one of the biggest roadblocks to new clean energy projects is problems with grid interconnection. Transforming our outdated electric grid is a must-do for our clean energy future – and our BIG WIRES Act will help us get there. 📊: @BerkeleyLab

Interesting paper from @mitceepr! As someone who spends all day, every day thinking about interregional transmission - $330 million saved per year over 56 GW of new lines and current build is extremely low. Am I missing something? ceepr.mit.edu/wp-content/upl…

Give me interregional transmission and massive reconductoring or give me death
ICYMI: Great story by @Jennifer_Hiller in @WSJ about load growth in Texas and how it’s the canary in the coal mine for the rest of the country. Great state numbers in the article, but I still think they’re very conservative/on the low end. Load growth is coming…

Guess what is "Perhaps the single greatest technological danger to a successful energy transition"? Yup: "the risk that the nation fails to site, modernize, and build out the electrical grid." (No transmission, no transition). nationalacademies.org/news/2…
