Jeff Kennett cut 8,500 Public Transport jobs, privatised the network, and closed multiple regional train lines (some since reopened by Labor). He also targeted the Upfield, Williamstown, and Alamein lines for closure. The Baillieu/Napthine govt cut Public Transport staff, reduced service targets, delayed maintenance, cut bus routes, paused the Metro Tunnel, and cancelled rail extensions, including the Melton electrification. While PM, Tony Abbott made it clear he will not be providing funding for any Public Transport projects. You get the jist -> The Liberals hate Public Transport. Jess Wilson wants to pause the SRL. Ok, but what comes after that? Cancellation? Or a delayed continuation? Tell us the truth. She promises to build the Airport Rail, but it remains unclear if the project will be scaled down or if vital connections like the Sunshine Superhub (essential for regional passengers) will be built. Her proposal for foreign-made hybrid trains suggests the Melton electrification is going to be dumped yet again. As for future rail extensions and level crossing removals, there is no commitment so far. At a time when Victoria desperately needs large-scale public transport investment, a Liberal govt risks taking the network backwards once again.
