The 2026 winning work of The Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation, GenScan AI, developed by Mary-Brenda Akoda, was presented to stakeholders in Abuja, bringing together leaders from government, healthcare, science and industry to explore its path towards real-world application. Among those at the presentation were Dr Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education; Professor Barth Nnaji, Chairman, Advisory Board of The Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation; Professor Yusuf Abubakar, Member of the Advisory Board; Dr Sophia Horsfall, General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, NLNG; Anne-Marie Palmer-Ikuku, Manager, Corporate Communications and Public Affairs, NLNG; Professor Adesoji Adesugba, First Deputy President, Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and Dr Kazeem Kolawole Raji, Director-General/CEO, National Board for Technology Incubation, who represented the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology. GenScan AI uses artificial intelligence to make MRI scans up to 90% faster, without requiring hospitals to purchase new MRI machines. โ€œOur interest goes beyond recognising an outstanding idea. We want to see scientific research make a practical difference in peopleโ€™s lives,โ€ said Dr Sophia Horsfall. For Dr Tunji Alausa, the innovation represents the kind of science Nigeria needs: โ€œscience that moves from laboratory into society.โ€ Professor Barth Nnaji described the work as one with significance beyond Nigeria, saying, โ€œIt looks like Dr Mary Akoda has done it for the world, not just for Nigeria.โ€ The conversations in Abuja now turn to the next important step: moving GenScan AI from an award-winning innovation towards clinical application and wider impact. #TheNigeriaPrizes #NigeriaPrizeForScienceAndInnovation #GenScanAI #Innovation #ScienceForImpact

To restate cleanly: the *current* problem with AI is not that we don't understand it or can't control it, it's that companies are knowingly using it to do harm or in scenarios they know are likely to cause harm (bomb schools, surveil protestors, cause/exacerbate psychosis, etc.)

The standard graduate application process is backward. You spend months researching programs, navigating faculty pages, and emailing professors who may or may not respond. You pay hundreds of dollars in application fees. Then you wait to find out if a lab actually has space, funding, or any interest in your research. Great AI research starts with the right supervisor match. The process should too. ๐Ÿงต

But this is my first time of seeing a backend footage of it. How broad must your heart be? How wise must your mind be? And how sold out must your spirit be to Kingdom advancement that you're willing to go such length; laying down whatever differences for a greater Cause? This blows my mind. But then, that's how it's meant to be. It shouldn't be a special thing that as Believers we should cross barriers for the Gospel. This is exactly what Jesus had in mind when He said these words: "๐‘ฉ๐’š ๐’•๐’‰๐’Š๐’” ๐’”๐’‰๐’‚๐’๐’ ๐’‚๐’๐’ ๐’Ž๐’†๐’ ๐’Œ๐’๐’๐’˜ ๐’•๐’‰๐’‚๐’• ๐’š๐’† ๐’‚๐’“๐’† ๐’Ž๐’š ๐’…๐’Š๐’”๐’„๐’Š๐’‘๐’๐’†๐’”, ๐’Š๐’‡ ๐’š๐’† ๐’‰๐’‚๐’—๐’† ๐’๐’๐’—๐’† ๐’๐’๐’† ๐’•๐’ ๐’‚๐’๐’๐’•๐’‰๐’†๐’“." - John 13:35 (KJV) The litmus test of true discipleship is Love, not speaking in tongues or rigorous fastings - Love! When people talk about politics and elections as if it's Chelsea vs Arsenal, these are the results. Elections have real life consequences. In 2001, in Abuja, African heads of state came to the honest conclusion that if they wanted quality healthcare for their people, they would need to put aside 15% of their annual budgets for health sector. After the "Abuja Declaration", health workers we're so excited about the good things to come. For context, the UK spends 38%, the US-26%, Saudi spends about 20%. Guess what Nigeria budgeted on healthcare in 2025? A measly 5%. Like our leaders agreed that 15% was needed and decided the lives of Nigerians were not so important and implemented 5% instead. How will there be bed spaces? There are about 79 federal tertiary hospitals, if you add state hospitals, there are about 120 tertiary hospitals catering for 200 million people. The health workers we're are complaining about their attitudes are stretched to the limit and are barely standing. A nurse who is ideally supposed to nurse 4-6 patients, is put in charge of 15-20 patients, all while earning less than N200k. If they attends to each patient the way they ideally should, they cannot possibly cater to all the patients under them. They don't have the allowance of time to be patient or polite as you'd want them to be. The same nurse switches to a private hospital or goes abroad and becomes the sweetest soul because they aren't under the pressure cooker that is the average Nigerian public hospital. About 60 thousand doctors are currently serving a population of 200million. If that doesn't make you worried, I don't know what will. Doctors are grossly overworked and underpaid as well. I did 5 surgeries in a 24hr span during my last call, and I promise you I didn't feel like being polite or empathetic at the end of the 5th surgery because I was feeling like collapsing myself. This is my 5th year of residency and I've been on annual leave once, 3 years ago. Health workers are running on fumes and deserve credit for just showing up instead of running away to better climes. Meanwhile the over 200 million Nigerians whose lives have literally been endangered by our leaders prefer to assault health care workers after a loss due to systemic failures rather than channel that rage against their wicked leaders. Your fellow celebrities, who themselves have witnessed firsthand the dysfunction of Nigerian healthcare will still come out to endorse the same people who are stealing the resources that are supposed to cater for the health of all Nigerians. You will probably also endorse APC too, should the opportunity arise. Finally, Paraphrasing @Wizarab10 , we all get the love (or leaders) we think we deserve.
To the president and 36 state governors ๐Ÿ˜”

ENOUGH PESSIMISM IN AI PLEASE I feel that we have become unreasonably pessimistic in our field. 1. I keep hearing AI engineers saying we have to make money quickly because thereโ€™s only like 2 years left before weโ€™re automated. Depressing. 2. I see a constant obsession with โ€œhaving a moatโ€. This is an incredibly sad mental frame. 3. I keep hearing โ€œwe have to catch upโ€. Soulless. And so on. People: Every solution creates the possibility to attack new real problems. We face gargantuan engineering challenges in our world. How to capture carbon? How to get rid of teflon and plastics in water? How to invent batteries that are at least 30 times more efficient? How to solve clean energy? Better solar cells? Better ways of producing clean energy so we stop wars and famine? How to eradicate hundreds of diseases? Cures for addiction? And so on. Real engineering is about being brave and truly attacking the many problems we face, to engage with a true desire to improve the lives of others and our environment. Good engineering is not about protecting your product to make money at the expense of progress (moat thinking). Good engineering is about ensuring your children and grandchildren will be proud of the choices you made in 30 or 50 years. It is about empowering others. It is about advancing science. It is about being one step ahead. Always, one step ahead, meaningfully, proudly. These are great times. Letโ€™s start thinking positively about all the wonderful things we could achieve together.
