Israelis are going to the polls today to vote in one of the most consequential elections in the country's history. Most opinion polls say #Netanyahu's Likud, despite his many wars, is going to win far less seats than it won four years ago. But it doesn't necessarily mean that he would be voted out of power. Here is a guide to #Israel elections--this week's VFI newsletter. thehindu.com/news/internatio…

"Arabs vote same as Israelis"-- says the Israeli ambassador to Israel
Today is election day in Israel, which is a national holiday. All voting is in person, ID required. No mail-in or absentee ballots. Arabs vote same as Israelis. Contentious process, but it's a democracy-not many of those in this region!
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The Arab voters are Israeli citizens. Listing them in contrast to Israelis is misconstruing the facts. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_citi… cfr.org/backgrounders/…

India's ties with #China are still well below the 2019 levels, and the main reason is China's actions in eastern Ladakh, says Gautam Bambawale, India's former Ambassador to China. Watch here youtube.com/watch?v=_78DZEfX… @johnstanly @ananthkrishnan

India is the third largest economic power in terms of PPP, and great powers would try to woo India, through pressure, coercion or engagement, Amb. A #Lula victory seemed almost impossible after the first round. Flavio had taken a surprise lead; the Bolsonaro clan secured several victories; the far-right won more seats in Congress and at provincial levels; the broad right-wing candidates secured more votes than Lula; and the trump administration was clearly batting for Flavio. But then Lula is not Dilma. He is more of a mobiliser than a politician. He turned Flavio's unexpected advance in the first round against him in the run-off. He is here to stay; and Jair is there to stay in his little house-jail. #Brazil
Heartiest congratulations to my dear friend, President Lula, on his remarkable re-election victory. I look forward to working closely with him to further deepen and expand the multifaceted India-Brazil Strategic Partnership. Together, we will continue to strengthen our cooperation across diverse sectors, advance the shared priorities of the Global South and work towards a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable world. @LulaOficial

Iran said on Saturday (October 24, 2026) that U.S. warships would not be allowed to enter the Persian Gulf and warned that any attack by the U.S. and Israel would have repercussions beyond the country, amid reports that Washington was considering resuming air strikes. ✍️ @johnstanly thehindu.com/news/internatio…

Indian politics happens in Hindi. Political commentary should too. The language of the core of Indian politics is Hindi. That is both a cause and an effect of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rise. There is also a politics between the Hindi and non-Hindi tracks of India. The common language of conversation across non-Hindi regions, and between Hindi and non-Hindi regions, is English. But the @BJP4India wants to replace English with Hindi. The Hindu, under the leadership of Suresh Nambath, @nambath is making an effort to converse more with Hindi-speaking audiences. They will help decide the future of India. You will find a great deal of Hindi content on The Hindu’s platforms. Joining this effort, I will make Hindi translations of my commentaries available whenever possible. I am also attempting to produce video versions of my commentaries in Hindi. As far as my accent and diction are concerned, let me only say that there is no perfect way of speaking any language. There are dozens of English accents and dialects in New York City alone. More than the BJP’s push, however, it is the Hindi belt’s higher population growth that will increase its weight in Indian politics. If politics is increasingly conducted in Hindi, so too should political commentary be. It is only appropriate that I begin with my piece on delimitation Here's a gift link, which you will be able to read it without hitting a paywall for 24 hours. परिसीमनः भाजपा के दोनों हाथों में लड्डू, कांग्रेस के लिए आगे कुंआ और पीछे खाई - The Hindu thehindu.com/hindi/hindi-ver… youtube.com/shorts/XVvB82wYI…

Crude oil prices hit $115 despite US claims that the Strait of Hormuz is open. Remember, Brent crude was at $72 a barrel before the US and Israel started this war against Iran on Feb 28. And if Israel and the US resume strikes now, Iran will retaliate, pumping up prices further. Saudi Arabia is already at war with its critical infra under attack. We in #India, already hit by high energy prices, are going to get affected more by this madness by netanyahu and trump. Retail inflation is already at a 22-month high. Interest rates have started rising. Petrol and diesel prices will go up further in the coming days.

Netanyahu says his "friend" Modi told him "India and Israel are fighting terrorism together". Modi says he and the “Israeli Prime Minister underscored the urgent need to restore peace and stability in the region”.
Received a phone call from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. We reviewed the sustained momentum in our bilateral ties and reaffirmed our commitment to further strengthening our partnership. We also exchanged views on recent developments in West Asia and underscored the urgent need to restore peace and stability in the region. @netanyahu
