Pretoria High Schools for Girls and Boys in 1980s were brutal for teenagers who did not conform. Bullying, supported by teachers, was rife. As a refugee with no English I was ridiculed to the point I didn’t speak for 5 years. Only gained confidence to speak English at UCT.
