I played bass and electronics for ambient music pioneer Jon Hassell throughout the 2010s, playing on and co-producing his last two studio albums Listening to Pictures and Seeing Through Sound, and performing on his last few tours in Europe and the US.
Now excited to announce that @NDEYARECORDS, Jon's Warp-affiliated imprint, is releasing our last live concert with Jon as an album as well, Music Is Invisible. You can pre-order it direct below and hear the first track, 'Blue Ba-Ya'. This was a live concert at St John at Hackney (London 2015).
Jon has been my greatest musical influence ever since I was learning to play in high school, shaping my musical sensibilities for a lifetime, and it was a privilege to work on this music with him during his last decade. He passed away during COVID sadly, but Ndeya has continued releasing material of his that never saw the light of day, now in partnership with his family. Jon set the label up with Warp in 2015 as a home dedicated solely to his music.
I can’t stop listening to this one at the moment open.spotify.com/album/3637B…

always get a bit nervous when im working on the Mac and have half a dozen agent sessions open and then suddenly the internal fans start spinning like mad
should probably set up an automated fan speed alert
earlier in my career (in the 90s) i was a successful studio musician for awhile but after just a few years all the jobs i was getting got replaced by sequencers and synthesizers instead
and then later samplers and DAWs
yet i still got a lot of touring work and some studio gigs, what really changed is that in the pre-sequencer era, the main goal of a studio musician was to play as steadily and reliably as a machine
then when that got replaced by ACTUAL machines, suddenly it was the opposite, the only musicians to get hired were those who had some kind of original sound or special sauce to offer
ive been thinking about this lately because of the influx of AI music, tho before that it was sampling and Splice
its easier and easier to make the same sounds everyone else is, but standing out from the crowd and bringing something special is as hard and as rare as ever
its a totally different, non-technical skillset

this resonates with how I think about AI:

nice review of our Music is Invisible release in Pitchfork today pitchfork.com/reviews/albums…
had fun playing with the new Google Flow plugin builder last night! it's pretty hard to think of ideas in this space that haven't already been done, but this Quantum State Resonator we built seems to have some interesting new possibilities
some people know good music
be like @funkentechno and listen to the Jon Hassell concert album i performed on
What plugins do you want to make?
Artists and producers can now create their own custom instruments and effects, then export them as VST3/AU plugins to use directly in their DAW.
We're making it easy to bring these capabilities into professional setups, so producers can easily build tools tailored to their creative process.

That inane “Suno v6 pro et al has solved infinite personalized music” tweet annoyed me so much that I ended up writing an entire newsletter on the fallacy of AI somehow “solving” music
