Sorry this is probably more “LinkedIn” content but my word the announcement about PDEL (Preventative Departmental Expenditure Limits) is like catnip for a social care nerd like me 🤓 #Budget2026
What’s your favourite The Rest Is History ad break?
Mine is undoubtedly how they get from the Agrarian and Industrial Revolutions to the People’s Postcode Lottery’s biggest ever prize pot.
Goodbye little children
Goodnight you handsome men
Farewell to all you ladies and to all who knew me when
And I hope I’ll see you down the road, you meant more than I knew
As I was travellin’ travellin’ travellin thru.
God they won’t make another like Dolly Parton 💔
No no no no no no no
Absolutely not.
I refuse to comprehend this. I reject it.

I’m sorry but the lack of even 4G signal on the Cross Country route between Newcastle and Birmingham is actually embarrassing. Such a drag on productivity for a train that you have to be on for over 3 hours.
Adding “swanning in to collect your Starbucks mobile order when there’s a massive queue” to my “Speedy boarding” of things that feel so profoundly un-British we should probably legislate

No one on this earth is selling harder than Dominic Sandbrook and Tom Holland advertising Lloyds Banking on The Rest Is History podcast.
If Christopher Nolan really wanted to show his ability to dramatise epic poetry, he’d buy the rights to I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That).
I agree with much of the problem statement here but I think this framing around intergenerational unfairness skips over how younger adults with physical and learning disabilities and mental health needs also draw on social care support, and are a rising source of pressure.
The National Care Service has been promised before. Why could this time be different?
As Andy Burnham pledges to spend his political capital on fixing social care, the biggest challenge isn't just reforming the system – it's building public support for how to pay for it.
Our latest substack by Policy Director, @abbyabhaya, explores the politics of care reform, intergenerational fairness, and whether Labour can finally deliver a National Care Service.

RIP Bonnie Tyler.
Genuinely so sad to learn that Bonnie Tyler has passed away. Total Eclipse Of The Heart is absolutely alchemical in how it brings together a song with its perfect vocalist. Can recommend the full Faster Than The Speed Of Night album for high rock camp drama.

Some decent arguments in this piece but the idea that Radio 2’s output is “extravagantly catered for in the commercial sector” is laughable. Folk, blues, live music, current affairs at lunchtime, religious programming: you don’t get any of that on Heart, Greatest Hits, etc…
Revolution – not evolution – is required.
