Anyone else catch the giant lenticular cloud on Rainier today? I was hoping to shoot it for sunset from Seattle, but the air quality is too poor and it’s lost in the murk. #wawx

I appreciate Dario actually mentioning a specific possible harmful scenario: "Given the accelerating rate of AI capability development, it’s my worry that in 6–12 months such a swarm could be capable of taking over the entire internet with a persistent botnet"
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training. eink is fun, I troubleshooted a display today that wasn't updating and of course the answer was it was out of battery. A display that gets stuck left "on" when it's dead!

The lunar eclipse tonight from downtown Seattle. The best part of events like this is random groups assembling, I was outside a hotel so tons of people passed by and got a look.

The full moon rise in Seattle tonight. It was a little bit of a battle with the clouds, but still a gorgeous evening.

Got to watch a sea lion devour salmon today at the Ballard fish ladder. Seattle has some unique attractions!

Man, the #ThreeQueensFire in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness just exploded today. This is the satellite view 3 hours apart this afternoon, from almost nothing to three distinct plumes. This area is so gorgeous, what a disaster. #wawx

We're only a few degrees off a hurricane induced blizzard on the summit of Maunakea. Just incredible. #Lala

And there is snow! It’s possible Hawaii gets the only snow in the US today. nitter.gq/gdimeweather/status/20…
It's happening. Hurricane Lala is currently producing SNOW on the summit of Mauna Kea

You can smell smoke in Seattle this morning, but the air quality (PM2.5 wise) is good. The particles are still mostly aloft. I've seen a lot of people confused by this. plumeforecast.com/smoke-fore…

No eclipse for me this week, but I still put my solar filter to good use and got a really nice capture of the ISS passing in front of the sun today. It's the first time I have done this and I really like how it came out. There are currently 7 astronauts on the @Space_Station

Mount Rainier is my favorite place and a very rapidly growing fire showed up today in the Grand Park area not too far from Sunrise. Look at how fast this blew up over 3 hours.

This is the area that is currently burning in the #ThreeQueensFire, specifically the far side of the ridge at the end of the video. It's such a stunning area. Video taken from the summit of Hibox Mountain on August 15th 2022, look at all that blue sky! #wawx

I added vertical smoke profiles to my forecasting tool, it turned out really great. You can see how the profile changes over time for Seattle, we will be in the clear shortly. #wawx #orwx plumeforecast.com/smoke-fore…

I made an ensemble viewer for information about wildfire smoke. It covers models like the HRRR and RRFS, satellite, AQI, etc. It has really turned into something neat and I've gotten a lot of use out of it this week forecasting Seattle. plumeforecast.com #wawx

I don’t know how many more of these I can do, but I just want a place with real time news and discussion that doesn’t constantly get worse because of one stupid man threads.net/@tookthescenicro… – at Seattle, WA
