So appreciative of the contributions of Herman and @jpowellmcnutt. This volume will have a very long lasting impact on the field.
Just wrapped up a marvelous week of teaching the intensive/hybrid course, Global Church History - a class I’ve been developing for @WheatonCollege Divinity School online and in person the last 2 years 👏
Loved writing this piece for @mockingbirdmin about Mary Magdalene in the cemetery! The whole issue is excellent.

Today marks the traditional anniversary of the Council of Nicaea—20 May 325. That makes this the 1700th birthday of the Nicene Creed: the one majestic summary of the Christian faith embraced by every branch of Christianity. To mark the occasion, here’s a 4-minute excerpt from The First Hymn film, exploring the theme of the Trinity—already glorified in this ancient song in the century before Nicaea.
Coming soon!
I’m thrilled to have a piece in the Law & Gospel issue of @mockingbirdmin magazine.
My essay is entitled, “She who Hangs out in Cemeteries” #themaryweforgot
What is the particular significance of Mary Magdalene at the tomb? I can’t wait to share it with you.
Always a joy to see former MA Theology @WheatonCollege students thriving! Congrats @RevNiebauer on this important achievement 👏
Encomium 1: Professors
Despite not having any interest in writing a Biblical theology book, I managed to have some of the finest Biblical scholars as professors at both Wheaton at Duquesne:
@VanhoozerKevin's course on Scripture and Theology was my first grad class, and I still return to my notes from it often. It was here that I realized why I couldn’t understand early Christian commentaries, and why they were so different from modern ones. That set me on a path that eventually led to the writing of Four Mountains. No one quite has the perfect blend insight, kindness, and puns like Kevin Vanhoozer.
Daniel Treier is the only grad school professor to go over my writing assignments with a red pen. And I became a much stronger, clearer writer because of it. His course on Oliver O’Donovan made me want to pursue a PhD.
@jpowellmcnutt was the first professor to encourage me to pursue a PhD in theology—I don’t think I realized how much I needed that encouragement until I received it.
Bogdan Bucur’s OT class at Duquesne changed my life. Through it I was finally able to “get” early Christian Biblical interpretation. When he suggested that Moses was at Tabor to get his Sinai wish fulfilled, I was floored. Below is a passage from Four Mountains where I write on it.
Delighted to be interviewed by Ann Boyd at The Well about my book, The Mary We Forgot @BrazosPress! Link 🔗

Zwingli's hand-written copy of the Pauline Epistles. The marginalia includes an abundance of references to Origen and Erasmus's exegetical works. The very final page of the manuscript is simply the cherished line from Origen:
"Origen: docere autem est prophetare”

37 presentations later and our conference is now concluded. So nice to connect with a remarkably collegial, interdisciplinary, and international group of scholars. We’re already looking forward to our third and final 2026 conference - stay tuned for a call for papers this summer!
