Alchemy exists! Gold created from Mercury.. 😳
A San Francisco startup says it just turned mercury into real gold, and their own math says gold is one of the cheapest things their machine can make. Aim it at a different metal and it makes a cancer drug ingredient worth tens of billions of dollars a gram.
Here's how it works. When you fuse two kinds of hydrogen, deuterium and tritium, every single reaction kicks out a neutron moving at 14.1 MeV, which is absurdly fast. Fire one into mercury-198 and it knocks another neutron loose on the way through, so two come out and you're left with mercury-197. Give that a few days and it decays into gold-197, the only stable kind of gold there is. The whole trick needs neutrons above about 6 MeV, and regular nuclear reactors barely make those, while fusion makes one every time it fires.
Now swap the mercury for radium-226. Same reaction, one neutron in and two out, and you end up with radium-225, which decays into actinium-225. Novartis is building its next prostate cancer drug around actinium-225, and it's so scarce it sells by the millicurie, roughly $1,200 to $2,500 apiece. Price it by the gram and you're into the tens of billions of dollars, for a material so radioactive nobody could safely hold a gram of it anyway.
Marathon's team actually put a dollar value on a single fusion neutron in a paper this year. Use it to make electricity and it's worth about $3 × 10⁻²⁰. Gold comes in at $2.6 × 10⁻²⁰, basically a wash. Molybdenum-99, which goes into about 80% of nuclear medicine scans, is worth $2.6 × 10⁻¹⁷ a neutron. Actinium-225 is worth about $10⁻¹⁰, around 3 billion times what the electricity's worth.
That's why fusion people should care. Every fusion company you've heard of is chasing electricity, and selling electricity only pays once the plasma puts out something like 10 to 22 times the energy you pump in to heat it. The best result so far, at JET in England, was about a third. Add gold on the side and Marathon's math says you break even around 3x. For molybdenum-99, the number is 0.001x.
So a machine that gives back one-thousandth of the energy you feed it can still make money, as long as the neutrons hit the right metal.
By their numbers, a 3 megawatt machine running way below breakeven could cover the whole world's supply of molybdenum-99, which today comes from splitting uranium in a handful of research reactors. Today's experimental fusion machines already beat the gain that job needs.
Their second post basically says this out loud. Marathon now describes itself as an isotope company for radiopharma. Their chart shows roughly 390 targeted radiotherapy trials. Pluvicto, the prostate cancer drug Novartis launched at $42,500 a dose, did $1.9 billion in sales last year.
Gold still matters to them, just later. It's about a $700 billion a year market, and Marathon's paper figures it could soak up around 2 terawatts of fusion capacity, which is roughly the scale where fusion actually moves the grid. So the plan is to sell cancer isotopes out of small machines now and use gold to pay for the giant ones, years before electricity can pay for itself.

Across flight decks, cabins, hangars and control rooms, we owe each other that.
Sometimes the most important conversation starts with “How are you?”…and then making enough time to hear the answer.

صدور بيان إماراتي جديد يكشف هوية ودوافع مساعد قائد طائرة "فلاي دبي":
أعلن معالي المستشار الدكتور حمد سيف الشامسي، النائب العام للاتحاد، أن التحقيقات التي تباشرها النيابة العامة بشأن واقعة رحلة شركة "فلاي دبي" رقم (FZ1073)، المتجهة من دبي إلى تل أبيب بتاريخ 30 سبتمبر 2026، كشفت عن شروع مساعد قائد الطائرة، عُماني الجنسية، في تنفيذ مخطط ذي غرض إرهابي أعد له مسبقاً، استهدف السيطرة على الطائرة واستخدامها في تنفيذ عملية انتحارية تستهدف مبنى المسافرين بمطار بن غوريون في تل أبيب، بقصد إيقاع أكبر قدر ممكن من الخسائر البشرية.
وأوضح معالي النائب العام أن التحقيقات تتبعت المسار الفكري والمهني للمتهم، البالغ من العمر (29) عاماً، وتبين أن بوادر توجهه نحو التطرف والإرهاب بدأت عام 2017، خلال فترة دراسته في أستراليا، حيث تأثر بأفكار تكفيرية من خلال قراءته مؤلفات متطرفة ومتابعته محتوى إلكترونياً يمجد التنظيمات الإرهابية والعمليات الانتحارية.
وقد تطور هذا التأثر إلى تبنيه أفكاراً تحرض على العنف والإرهاب، واستلهامه هجمات 11 سبتمبر 2001، وترسخ فكرة تنفيذ عملية مماثلة باستخدام طائرة، وهو ما ارتبط، وفقاً لاعترافاته، باتجاهه إلى امتهان الطيران.
وأضاف معاليه أن المتهم تنقل خلال مسيرته المهنية بين عدد من شركات الطيران في دول مختلفة، إذ عمل لدى الطيران العُماني من عام 2020 حتى عام 2024، ثم التحق بالخطوط الملكية المغربية مطلع عام 2025 وعمل لديها عدة أشهر، قبل انتقاله إلى شركة "فلاي دبي" في يناير 2026.
وأقر المتهم بأنه خلال فترة دراسته في مدينة ملبورن الأسترالية، تردد على مسجد تابع للمعهد الملكي للتكنولوجيا (RMIT)، وتعرف إلى القائمين على مركز "ماي سنتر" من خلال تردده على المسجد، مشيراً إلى أن المركز كان يديره شخص لبناني يُدعى "أبو حمزة"، ويحظى، بحسب أقواله، بدعم جمعية مرتبطة بجماعة الإخوان المسلمين، وأنه تهيأ نفسياً وبدنياً لتنفيذ مخططه، بتكثيف متابعة مواد تحرض على الإرهاب، والتدرب على الملاكمة على يد مدرب خاص.
وأظهرت التحقيقات أن المتهم استغل مشاركته في رحلتين سابقتين إلى تل أبيب لاستطلاع مسار الرحلة والمطار، في إطار إعداده الشخصي لمخططه الإرهابي، قبل أن يشرع في تنفيذه خلال الرحلة الثالثة بتاريخ 30 سبتمبر 2026.
كما شملت التحقيقات فحص إجراءات التحاق المتهم بشركة " فلاي دبي"، وتبين استيفاؤه متطلبات التوظيف المهنية والأمنية، بما في ذلك رخصة الطيران وشهادة حسن السيرة والسلوك والفحوص اللازمة، دون أن تظهر خلال تلك الإجراءات أية مؤشرات تكشف عن توجهاته المتطرفة أو نيته تنفيذ مخطط إرهابي.
وفي يوم الواقعة، باغت المتهم قائد الطائرة داخل قمرة القيادة واعتدى عليه بفأس الطوارئ، فيما قاوم القائد الاعتداء وحاول الاستغاثة. وكان على متن الطائرة قائد رحلة العودة، الذي تصادف وجوده بالقرب من قمرة القيادة وقت الاعتداء، فلاحظ تكرار فتح بابها وإغلاقه على نحو غير مألوف، ما أثار ارتيابه، فاقترب منها وحاول الدخول باستخدام الرمز السري، حتى تمكن من ذلك وشاهد المتهم يعتدي على قائد الطائرة وعلى الفور، تدخل بمساعدة أحد أفراد الضيافة وعدد من الركاب، وتمكنوا من إنقاذ القائد المصاب والسيطرة على المتهم، فيما تولى قائد رحلة العودة ومساعده استعادة السيطرة على الطائرة وتحويل مسارها والهبوط بها بسلام في مطار تبوك بالمملكة العربية السعودية.
وقد أدلى المتهم، في حضور محاميه ومع كفالة جميع الضمانات القانونية المقررة له، باعتراف تفصيلي بدوافعه ومراحل التخطيط والتنفيذ، مقراً بأنه تصرف بمفرده دون مشاركة آخرين، فيما لا تزال التحقيقات جارية للتحقق من ذلك.
كما استمعت النيابة العامة إلى أقوال قائد الطائرة وطيار رحلة العودة ومساعده وأفراد الطاقم، وأثبت تقرير الطب الشرعي أن إصابات قائد الطائرة تركزت في الرأس، وهو موضع حيوي قاتل، وأنها حديثة ومعاصرة للواقعة، ونتجت عن الاعتداء بأداة تتفق في طبيعتها مع فأس الطوارئ، بما يتوافق مع أقوال المتهم وقائد الطائرة وشهادات الشهود.
وتواصل النيابة العامة فحص الأدلة والتحقق من وجود شركاء أو ارتباطات أخرى، واستكمال التسجيلات والتقارير الفنية، على أن تعلن ما يستجد من نتائج وفقاً لما تقتضيه مصلحة التحقيق.
