It's never over because only truths move the world, truth is beauty, and beauty is what makes life worthwhile. Programming becomes art when it captures one of these truths in self-evident form. Just as a sculpture becomes beautiful when it captures the essence of a form, or a biography when it captures the soul of a man, a program becomes beautiful when it captures the soul of a machine.
However proficient our tools become, they'll never speak truths. They'll be merely accurate and correct, perfectly conforming to some specification with faultless mathematical rigor. These are not the same. Is a Renoir portrait peering into the soul of a dismal man any less beautiful because we have machines so perfect they can perfectly reproduce the imperfections in the original? Or because the painter may not have captured the geometry of his subject's face with atomic precision?
I wouldn't despair. The world will always have a place for people who see machines as more than tools.
