The abortion Craig and I had 22 years ago allowed us the time to become sober - and then to create careers and a healthy family. Our abortion saved our lives.

1/ Every year, I give a talk that wipes me out-emotionally & mentally. But it’s an impt talk to give: about the experience of women in medicine, academics, STEM. It’s hard because it hits home; & because I answer any question & tell the truth. Here are some facts; more in thread

Can I be honest? I’ve never really liked the phrase “starting a family” in reference to pregnancy. It implies a limited path to family. Starting a family can also be fostering or adopting children, choosing not to have bio children or being unable to, and the family we choose.

With new votes joining the tally, we are on a strong path. But even while we wait for more, let’s celebrate the extraordinary organizers, volunteers, canvassers & tireless groups that haven’t stopped going since Nov. Across our state, we roared. A few miles to go...but well done!

I’ve given half my life to medicine. And medicine wouldn’t give my husband a chest x-ray. Some kids stole a truck yesterday. And they almost stole my husband’s life alongside it. (1)

I just found out that my department voted unanimously for my promotion to full professor!!! This is just the first step in the process but it’s an important one, and the last time I was in this situation it went very differently. A thread.

#Healthcare should: - be less reliant on #insurance for >80% of services - have a catastrophic backstop for all - for outpatient or elective matters, be transparently priced - offer a real paradigm for customer service and remediation for errors The above would fix a lot. #dpc

IUD in the US = $884.50. Same IUD in Canada = $50.25 And FWIW, these are the actual order forms I was looking at this AM. #womenshealth #contraception #drugprices
Buying an IUD in the US is 1660% more expensive than in Canada. That's crazy.

*a thread on language and reproductive injustice* Today I checked the MAR and noticed a nexplanon ordered for one of my spanish-speaking patients. Weird, because I just talked to her and she’s unsure, I was just about to print her some @RHAP1 handouts in Spanish.

A must watch video about the benefits of coaching in healthcare by @Atul_Gawande: youtube.com/watch?time_conti… (shout out to @PCareProgress for helping me see what coaching in a primary care setting can look like!)
Beyond devastated at the suffering and loss of this beautiful human being. Reminded of the critical work of colleagues like Dr. Renee Williams around racial health inequities in colorectal cancer. Black Americans have the highest mortality & lowest survival rates. #RacismNotRace
