You don’t need to rack your brain trying to figure out what to look out for. Simply ask your designer to develop a Quality Inspection Plan (quality checklist) to help you identify the key things to check at every stage of the work.
Being physically present on a construction site doesn’t mean you know what’s happening. If you don’t know what to look for, you’ll watch mistakes happen right in front of you and still pay for them. Site supervision is more than showing up. It’s knowing what to check.

BUILDING KNOWLEDGE: 4 TYPES OF FOUNDATION EVERY HOMEOWNER SHOULD KNOW! 1) RAFT FOUNDATION Do you know why some buildings use raft foundations? A raft foundation is a large concrete slab that spreads the weight of a building over a wider area. It is used when the soil condition and building design make it suitable. But you don’t just choose it because you want a strong foundation. The soil must be tested, and an engineer must approve the design. Have you seen a raft foundation before?

BUILDING YOUR HOUSE: STAGE 002/009 FOUNDATION The foundation carries the weight of your entire building. Get it wrong, and you risk serious problems. What happens here? Excavation. Reinforcement and concrete casting. Foundation blockwork. Backfilling and compaction. Common types of foundation: Strip – supports walls. Pad – supports individual columns. Raft – spreads the building’s weight over a large concrete slab. Pile – transfers building loads deep into the ground. What homeowners don’t know: Your neighbour’s foundation may not be suitable for your land. Soil condition and building weight determine the right foundation. Mistake to avoid: Choosing a foundation without proper soil investigation and structural design. Never compromise your foundation just to save money Follow this series. Let’s build with knowledge, not guesswork.

BUILDING KNOWLEDGE: 4 TYPES OF FOUNDATION EVERY HOMEOWNER SHOULD KNOW! Before you spend millions building your dream home, understand what holds your building from underneath. There are different types of foundations, and each has its own purpose. 1. STRIP FOUNDATION Used mainly under walls to spread the building’s weight into the ground. Common in bungalow construction. 2. PAD FOUNDATION Used under individual columns to carry the weight of the building down to the ground. 3. RAFT FOUNDATION A large concrete slab that spreads the building’s weight over a wide area. Used when separate footings may not be suitable. 4. PILE FOUNDATION Used when the soil near the surface is too weak to carry the building safely. It transfers the weight deeper into the ground. HOMEOWNER’S TIP: I’ll be sharing real pictures from construction sites and explaining each foundation in simple terms, so you can understand what you’re seeing and why it is used. Remember, not every building needs the same foundation. The soil, building size and design determine the right choice. The beauty of a building starts with what you don’t see: its foundation. Save this post and share it with someone planning to build.

I’m 41, and I work as the administrative officer in a mid-sized construction company in Port Harcourt. Last year we hired a young graduate named Amaka as a junior site clerk. Her salary was ₦28,000 a month. From her second week our site manager, a woman named Bose, began to single her out. Amaka was given the files no one else wanted. She was told to stay behind after the others had closed. When she finished, Bose would look at the clock and say she had wasted company time. In the third month the deductions started. Everyone else received their full salary. Amaka’s envelope contained ₦21,500. Bose said she had damaged a company phone and the balance would be recovered. No receipt was shown. The following month it was ₦19,000. The reason given was ā€œpoor reporting.ā€ Amaka wrote the amounts in a small notebook she kept in her bag. She also began to record the conversations on her phone whenever Bose called her into the site office. Bose started speaking about her in front of the other staff. She called her slow. She called her ungrateful. Two of the senior women began to laugh. They stopped greeting Amaka in the morning. One of them started leaving the dirty cups on her table and saying the new girl would wash them. Amaka washed them. She needed the job. One afternoon Bose called her in and told her she had asked around. She said she knew Amaka had no uncle in any ministry and no one who could make a phone call. She said, ā€œThat is why you will stay here and do exactly what you are told.ā€ Amaka nodded. That night she added the sentence to her notebook.

A married man will most likely not leave his wife for you. Get that straight. Some men will tell you everything you want to hear just to get what they want. Don't be a victim.

Construction X, it’s time for everybody to talk! Some of you dragged me recently over the window discussion. But now that I’m asking which one you prefer, everybody has suddenly gone quiet. Let’s hear your opinions. That’s how we learn from each other.
If you were building your house today, which one would you prefer ? Forget beauty for a moment. Think about ventilation, security, cost and maintenance. Which one makes more sense for a Nigerian home, and WHY? Double window. Single window

A man may not have money today but can have integrity, ambition, discipline and a genuine plan for tomorrow. It’s better to marry a man who is genuinely struggling but has integrity, ambition and peace to offer than a Yahoo boy living large with stolen money. Money can finish. Fraud can catch up with you. And you shouldn’t have to pay for the consequences of a man’s greed.
