Covid (@UCSF) Chronicles, Day 504
To me, the most confusing time in the pandemic was May 2020, as we exited lockdown and nobody quite knew what they should & shouldn’t do (clean the mail? touch the dog?).
But now is giving May 2020 a run for its money. (🧵1/25)

We should worry about the future "worse" variants that will likely result from uncontrolled spread.
But they are not likely to "escape vaccine-induced immunity." There are several reasons why this is the case.
Replying to @DrTomFrieden
1) The emergence of future variants that can escape vaccine-induced immunity. Delta may not be the worst variant the virus deals us. Continued uncontrolled spread around the world makes this scenario more likely.

Yesterday there was a flurry of scolding FDA & CDC, mainly from non-scientists/public health folks, about the J&J pause.
But this was the right thing to do for many reasons. Transparency, informing clinicians & vaccinees, & investigating safety signals is how this should work.
