Chancellor John Healey is set to hike alcohol duty and slap 2p on every pint in the Budget. 🍺 The government takes over 10 times more than the pub owner. The cost of living crisis is a cost of government taxation of small businesses crisis.

So apparently reservoirs are running dry. Water companies have sold 35 reservoirs in the past decade and built precisely zero major reservoirs since 1992. Meanwhile, data centres are slurping millions of litres of water a day - explicitly left out of the national water plans.

Statement from the Carlisle United Supporters Club London Branch It was with great sadness that the London Branch learned this week that our founder, Mike Houghton, passed away at a care home in his hometown of Whitehaven. We were also very sad to hear of the passing of David Leitch who formed the Barrow National Supporters Club in London a couple of years after the London Branch. LB member, Malcolm Fawcett, attended the first meeting of the branch 52 years ago and became the first treasurer of both the London Branch and the Barrow National Supporters Club. Malcolm said from his home in Texas “ Mike was the true founder of the London Branch, and every member owes him a huge debt of gratitude. While others thought of the possibility of starting a branch, Mike acted and was its early driving force becoming the first Chairman.” He also said of David Leitch “The saddest thing is that Dave passed away just days before he was due to be presented with an award from Barrow AFC marking the 50th Anniversary of the formation of the Barrow National Supporters’ Club and while no member could ever underestimate the time and effort he made in keeping the Supporters’ Club and Football Club afloat, I’m not sure whether those living in Barrow necessarily had the same appreciation of Dave’s hard work.” The London Branch, from the small beginnings of 6-7 Carlisle fans in the Finborough Arms in November 1974, is now a thriving group of nearly 400 members throughout the UK and the world thanks to Mike Houghton (and Malcolm Fawcett). Thank you and RIP to Mike Houghton and, also to David Leitch. You can read Malcolm Fawcett's words here carlislelondonbranch.org/fon… @officialcufc @joncolman @CUFC_SLO @bbccumbriasport @BarrowAFC

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham for about $2.5 million. Their club later received roughly $24 million in taxpayer-funded grants. Then reporters started asking for the paperwork. The money was intended to help upgrade the stadium for international events. Officials said the improvements would bring visitors, jobs and investment to the area. But in April 2026, a Guardian investigation raised questions about the first grant, worth approximately $5 million. According to the report, the council awarded it before completing its final subsidy assessment or signing a funding agreement. The agreement wasn’t completed until September 2025. The council defended its process, saying due diligence had been carried out before any money was transferred. Meanwhile, Wrexham was attracting private investors too. In December 2025, Apollo Sports Capital announced a minority investment. Reynolds and McElhenney remained majority owners. In the video below, McElhenney remembers people laughing when they first mentioned reaching the Premier League. Three promotions later, that ambition looked much closer. The financial debate had changed too: how much public money should help fund a club that wealthy private investors already wanted to own?

💙So much love for Dean Walling at Solihull today - including from the #cufc team and staff. After the game Rob Elliot and Morgan Feeney spent plenty of time talking to him, offering their best wishes and inviting him into the club when next in Carlisle. (pic: Richard Parkes)
