Proud to say that if my son was at home, crying all alone on the bedroom floor because he's hungry, I'd remind him that there is rice at home.

Heads up that in the last decade, the full-time equivalent salary on the minimum wage is up 77% from £15k to £26.5k Meanwhile both the personal allowance and the 40% tax band threshold haven't moved in seven years In 2016 someone earning minimum wage paid just £795 of tax a year; now they pay £2,773
🚨NEW: Chancellor John Healey is set to raise the National Living Wage for workers aged 21+ from £12.71 to around £13.20 per hour, while 18–20-year-olds will see their rate increase from £10.85 to £11.27 Both represent an increase of 3.9%

Seeing this visualised is insane but also explains so much about the high earner discourse
Time to post my biannual “how artificially compressed are British wages”. Rising minimum wage and a 50k+ p/a tax bracket that runs to 40% of earnings, and hasn’t adjusted for inflation. This form of artificial wage compression has turned everyone in Britain into low productivity tax cattle - you have zero incentive to become anything other here. This is also a form of ambition and productivity compression. Source, ONS, Fig 5: ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabo…

Student loans were sold to students as "you'll earn more, so it's only fair you pay some of that back towards your education cost" Unless changed, of the five plans students are on - three of the repayment thresholds will now be *below* the minimum wage.
Britain’s new minimum wage: £27,456 a year. Higher-rate income tax kicks in at £50,270. Wage compression the Soviet Union could only have dreamed of.

From Jan 2027 you're protected from unfair dismissal after 6 months in a job instead of 2 years (the "day 1" rights, not really day 1 anymore). That's the main reason most people don't move. A new job means probation, proving yourself again, learning loads of new stuff, and 2 years where they can let you go for basically anything. Staying put means easy hours and tasks you've done thousands of times. 6 months of risk instead of 24 makes that a lot less of a trade imo
Every time I've passed 3 years at a company, my pay rises have flatlined. The advice I got as a grad was the opposite. Find a good job, build tenure, stay loyal, people respect loyalty. I don't think they do anymore. Companies will always pay more for the new person walking in than for the one who's been there 4 years and knows where everything is. Moving jobs has made me better too, you see how other teams work and pick up different tech along the way. Someone with one company and one stack on their CV isn't that appealing imo

Were shows using Dreams by the Cranberries as much as they do before Derry Girls came out? Not complaining at all, I just don’t understand how I never heard that song before Derry Girls and suddenly it’s everywhere
