October 1: The Shining (1980) + Doctor Sleep Director's Cut (2019). Decided to start with a twofer, Stanley Kubrick's classic OG and Mike Flanagan's intertwined sequel, both based upon novels published by Stephen King.

October 26: Overlord (2018). An alternate history horror film that eases you in as a revisionist WWII action film then flips part way through and becomes Wolfenstein with a splash of Resident Evil. A polished and fun modern day B-movie.

October 25: The Keep (1983), a WWII supernatural horror film written and directed by Michael Mann. The studio trimmed over 100 minutes from the runtime, and you can tell. Good effects, great location, but it feels choppy and rushed.

October 24: Elvira's MTV Halloween Party (1984), a nostalgic five hour TV special featuring music videos, commercials, and the 1968 film Night of the Living Dead, presented by Elvira. Available to watch on YouTube and Internet Archive.

October 23: Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977). A surreal paranormal / supernatural semi-horror film that took big risks that didn't pay off at the box office. While not amazing, I like that they tried something different.

Wouldn't you like to see something strange?

This, our town of Halloween"

October 22: The Black Scorpion (1957). A creature feature in the style of Them!, with cool stop-motion animation effects by Willis O'Brien. The story and characters play second fiddle to the monsters, but it's a fun romp.

October 21: His House (2020), a folk horror thriller from British filmmaker Remi Weekes. A migrant drama at it's core, the protagonists are subjected to supernatural horrors while also having to deal with the ghosts of their past.

October 20: Saw II (2005). I enjoyed Saw (2004) as a clever horror thriller, where Saw II just assaults your senses and feels more like a loud and gory music video. Interesting set pieces, but I didn't gel with the characters.

2026 October 19: Hokum (2026). A mixed bag of folklore and supernatural horror, Hokum was entertaining but did have some odd, and often unfathomable, real world plot and continuity issues. The twisty whodunit angle is good though.
