Breathtaking. Disastrous. In trying to save journalism in the country the govt and legacy media lobby somehow managed to create the conditions that give big tech the kill switch for an entire industry.
Google now confirming it is preparing to block news links in Canada as a result of Bill C-18. Awaiting final regulations, but says draft regs don’t fix flawed law. Appears to have arrived at same conclusion as Meta. Disastrous law about to get worse.

A teenage Bryan Hall was hired as a jazz DJ in 1953 by then @ckuaradio manager Jack Hagerman, who was known on-air as John Worthington, CKUA's "Old-Disc Jockey".
Like Hallsy, Jack never "retired". He "shifted gears" in his late 80s, but never quit working on radio.
Legends, both.

Excellent work @klaszus, thanks for letting me in on the conversation. Working at a large daily newspaper was a dream come true. I am grateful for the late nights, deadlines, angry editors, pizza on election nights, Thursday drinks at Buchanan's. All of it. Quite a trip.
For the first time in its 140-year history, the Calgary Herald has no fixed address. But the paper has been in slow decline for decades. What do we lose when the city’s largest newspaper is decimated? #cdnmedia sprawlcalgary.com/calgary-he…

This is a great piece. The Edmonton Journal version of this would be a banger of a story.

Another fantastic #DoubleStufSprawlcast from @klaszus about the rise and fall of the Calgary Herald! Even Nose Creek gets a mention! A lot of our historical research for @savenosecreek has come from the Calgary Herald digital archives.
Great Work!

Loved it. But Catherine Ford mentioned that she’s saddened about how everyone has their own echo chamber. I’d argue the Herald was an echo chamber for a certain class of people. Which is one of the reasons for its decline.

As a former freelance writer & columnist for the Herald & Swerve, I've also always wondered what was going on inside.
This is a remarkable & fascinating deep dive into the Herald's history, & a good reminder why it's important to support local journalism.
Bravo, @klaszus

Man I loved those old time newspaper newsroom environments. When I first arrived at The Edmonton Journal it was just like out of the movies. Cigarette scarred wooden desks and a flask in a few of the bottom left hand drawers. So many characters. And outstanding content.
This is a story I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I dug into the slow decline of the Calgary Herald—and what it means for civic life in our city. New in @sprawlcalgary sprawlcalgary.com/calgary-he…

This is good.
And so sad.
Society suffers when local news slowly shrinks.
Fascinating.

I like listening to podcasts while I'm drawing, but for this one, I also had to take a look at the transcript at sprawlcalgary.com to see all those old photos from Calgary Herald days of yore. Pretty cool #yyc history!
