Phenotypic heterogeneity is generated by passive mechanisms like noise in gene expression, right? Not always! Check out an ACTIVE mechanism for generating diversity in a clonal bacterial population: biorxiv.org/cgi/content/shor…

‘By 2050, not only will AMR perhaps be responsible for 10 million deaths annually it will cost the global economy over $100 trillion—this dwarfs the impact of COVID-19 and emphasize the urgent threat of AMR’ journals.plos.org/plosmedici…

We found that sdrM is required for the existence of the amplifications, and without sdrM, S. aureus always chooses to evolve multiple mutations in the DNA gyrase and topoisomerase. Therefore, the decision between the two alternate evolutionary trajectories is determined by sdrM.

As a follow up to this paper, we are currently looking at possible factors that are initiating the amplifications. I would like to thank @AnuKhareLab for mentoring me through out this project. And, Ganesh Sundar for doing the very first evolution. #antimicrobialresistance#mrsa

We also found out that the stability of these genomic amplifications can lead to cross resistance against Streptomycin. Mutations within sdrM seem to also emerge earlier than the emergence of any canonical mutations.

it was generally thought that non-homologous recombination might not be present due to the absence of the genetic determinants seen in other bacteria.
