So very stoked to share this project with the world, from our beautiful nook of Tacoma WA. It all started with the women themselves--so many incredible ladies in this town. They run some of my favorite places, and imho are showing how to do it right, and deliciously!

The Tri-Cities -- a region with a metro population of more than 300k people -- will soon no longer have a daily print newspaper. McClatchy has begun the process of slashing print days in its markets and the T-C is among the first. Its goal is to eventually go all-digital.

Weird Tacoma street etiquette Q: I fondly recall the bizarre concept of my hometown Pittsburgh Left, wherein you, going straight, let the car opposite the intersection turn left *first* (as opposed to the left-turner having to wait until the light is basically red). 1/

Recently I wondered: In Tacoma, so many side streets have neither stop signs nor roundabouts. (Don't get me started on how no one here knows how to use a roundabout, traffic circle, whatever! Y'all are crazy). Those that do have stop signs, it's usually the East-West street. 2/

In Lincoln/SE/Eastside it seems anyway. So my Q... Is there an unwritten rule that the East-West car slows down at the stop sign-less intersections, and the North-South road has the *culturally accepted* right of way? Or are there no rules, written or un/it's just a free-for-all

Friends wanted brunch but waits at my top picks were too long on Sunday. We ended up at one of Tacoma's old-school diner-type places, were sat right away but waited almost 45min for food to land and honestly... it was kinda bad

Burien has a Grand Central Bakery and Bakery Nouveau. Tacoma has... oh wait

Per the unknown and probably useless Google Maps algorithm: All the usually busy on a Friday night @6thAveDistrict bars/restaurants are 'less busy than usual' but guess which one is 'busier than usual'?

Donuts are like pizza: people love their neighborhood shop. But unlike pizza, donuts travel well.

Some kinda method to the madness! Doused in glaze and toasted coconut
I'm Pao's 4 Life. So I disagree with @kriscarasher here. That said, I can't argue with her method - and, having recently undertaken a tour of local donut spots, I agree that her top pick is worthy of the honor. thenewstribune.com/entertain…

Many small indie restaurants try to do right by their people, while giving us a great experience, but we make it so GD hard. "There's a certain point where people aren't willing to pay for the food and you can't just demand increases on a business." bonappetit.com/story/konbi-c…

Appears some South Sound folks are looking for paczki. Sorry, not much of a thing here! Legendary makes them for a few days around Mardi Gras, otherwise Marek's in Tukwila only Polish bakery around.

More donut/doughnut news: I went into OHOD having high hopes. Sorry to say I left underwhelmed, at least after visiting several other shops. Every donut looks great, a few are fine choices, but can't say I'd go out of my way. Only standout was "burnt" bmilk bar, just different.
In case you've been missing my Donut Delusions on Insta, an update: Happy Donuts in Puyallup a strong contender. Super fluffy raised and twists, good flavor. Solid old fashioned. Decent fritter w more apples than I've had anywhere. Would skip the cake.

Elsewhere in Lakewood, Variety Donuts is a sleeper for select styles. Very much liked the cinnamon twist and the tangy buttermilk bar/bun. Cruller and fritter both slight miss, liked the crunch but only a whisper of apple. Behold the raised here though, a thing of beauty.

Sunny's in Fife would only hit if you had to be in Fife. Old fashioned too crunchy, but benefits from the chocolate "coating" that's not quite glaze. Raised and cake satisfactory. Fritter was a surprise -- good flavor, some apples, lots of cinnamon, almost like a roll.

In my next edition of Donut Delusions: Dockside is a sleeper on the other side of town, for select donuts. The raised (coconut in this case) has nice flavor + more lively interior texture than many of its area ilk. Glazed old fashioned a hint of lemon?

Helen's on the Eastside has some fans, but I left mostly underwhelmed but still some things to like: extra crunchy fritter, if you're into that. OF and cake serviceable. Kinda liked the plain buttermilk bar, perfect w coffee. Raised too dense. Cruller a winner, creamy interior.
