Paris has the Louvre. New York has the Met. And Patna has a museum that has made it to the world’s top 10! The Bihar Museum has secured the 9th spot in the 2026 list of the World’s 100 Best Museums, making it the highest-ranked museum in Asia and the only Indian museum on the list. Opened in 2017, this architectural landmark brings Bihar’s rich history to life through ancient sculptures, rare coins, manuscripts and artefacts spanning centuries. One of its most celebrated treasures is the Didarganj Yakshi, a remarkable Mauryan-era sculpture known for its distinctive polished finish and intricate craftsmanship. From the Mauryan, Gupta and Pala periods to Buddhist and Jain heritage, its galleries preserve stories that have shaped India’s past. With dedicated spaces for children, interactive learning and cultural exhibitions, the museum makes history accessible to a new generation. Its galleries hold centuries of history. Now, its ninth-place ranking is giving the world another reason to discover Bihar. #BiharMuseum #Bihar #Patna #IndianHeritage #IncredibleIndia [Bihar Museum Patna, Bihar Museum ranked 9th in the world, World’s 100 Best Museums 2026, best museum in Asia]

Global wildlife populations have declined by an average of 73% in five decades. But India offers some hope. @WWF's latest Living Planet Report highlights India's conservation gains, particularly among tigers, lions and rhinos. Yet experts warn that protecting wildlife beyond reserves and tackling human-wildlife conflict remain major challenges. 🔗 Read the full story by @jayantabasuenv : downtoearth.org.in/wildlife-… #WildlifeConservation #Biodiversity #India #LivingPlanetReport

A long post, but trust me, these stories are worth your time. As Wildlife Week concludes today, here are some little-known but significant stories of species revival in India. In our article in @the_hindu today, Yash Veer @IUCN and I write about the efforts of governments, forest departments, scientists and communities to bring threatened wildlife back from the brink. India’s Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats scheme supports recovery action for 24 identified species and their habitats. Recovery needs sustained funding. The Government of Tamil Nadu’s Endangered Species Conservation Fund prioritises mahseer, striped hyena, Madras hedgehog, lion-tailed macaque and hornbill. Internationally, the Phoenix Species Project, launched by Re:wild and the Bezos Earth Fund in 2026, has committed $200 million to the recovery of 100 of the world’s most threatened species. Here are some inspiring stories from the field. Clouded leopard Meghalaya’s plan for its elusive State animal combines habitat restoration, monitoring and community participation, with 14 priority landscapes identified across the northeast. Snow leopard India’s first scientific assessment estimated 718 snow leopards in 2024. In Kibber, local women help conservation teams set camera traps, monitor populations and protect wildlife. Dugong Tamil Nadu’s 448.34 sq km Dugong Conservation Reserve protects this marine mammal’s seagrass habitat. A 2026 assessment estimated 270 dugongs across Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar; fishermen help by releasing animals caught in nets. Sangai Manipur’s wetland deer is a priority under India’s recovery programme. Saving its wetland habitat is essential to its survival. Hangul Kashmir’s hangul is supported through India’s species recovery framework, with habitat protection, research and monitoring central to its future. Nilgiri tahr Project Nilgiri Tahr combines surveys, radio-collaring and habitat assessment for Tamil Nadu’s State animal. Surveys recorded 1,303 tahrs in 2025 and 1,364 in 2026. Vultures The veterinary diclofenac ban, conservation breeding and safer habitats support recovery. Madhya Pradesh recorded 12,981 vultures in 2025, up from 8,397 in 2019; Pinjore’s breeding centre works with white-rumped, long-billed and slender-billed vultures. Asiatic lion Gujarat’s lion population rose from 674 in 2020 to 891 in 2025, supported by long-term protection, habitat management and community participation. Greater one-horned rhinoceros Grassland management, monitoring and translocation support recovery. In Assam’s Pobitora, communities contribute to protection and conflict reduction. These gains take years of patient fieldwork, political commitment and scientific effort. Sustaining that work is how we turn hope into a secure future for wildlife. #SpeciesRecovery #WildlifeConservation #Biodiversity Photos -Sangai deer -Manipur Forest Dept. How to succeed in life? Talk softly. Eat sensibly. Sleep sufficiently. Work patiently. Think creatively. Behave decently. Earn honestly. Save regularly. Spend intelligently. Simple rules, but difficult to master.

Agree with the thrust of this important piece. Our farmers need support to ensure they benefit from access to the world's markets for agricultural produce. Well argued @pjkc23!
My OpEd in print today in @the_hindu on the continuing relevance of the National Commission on Farmers on the occasion of Prof MS Swaminathan’s 3rd death anniversary. The NCF was a missed opportunity in myriad ways but the die is not yet cast and the opportunities to institutionalise it in law still exist. That would be the greatest possible tribute to a man who championed farmers rights and the greatest freedom of them all - the freedom from hunger and dependence. @ShashiTharoor, @narlak, @vargheseKgeorge, @suhasinih, @sardesairajdeep, @ravish_journo, @SachinPilot, @MukulWasnik, @icarindia, @AgriGoI, @TVKVijayHQ, @ptrmadurai, @PChidambaram_IN, @vidyarthee, @kaushikcbasu, @ChouhanShivraj, @KanimozhiDMK, @svaradarajan, @ShekharGupta, @VTankha

They started behind. They finished on top. Kiran Pahal, M R Poovamma, Prachi Choudhary and Vithya Ramraj have won gold for India in the women’s 4x400m relay at the 2026 Asian Games. Kiran handed over the baton in third. Then Poovamma clawed her way forward, Prachi kept India in front, and Vithya took charge of the final leg. Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Nasser came charging back in the final stretch, but Vithya held her ground to bring India home in 3:29.69. Four athletes. One team. One unforgettable finish. Take a bow, champions. You’ve made India proud. 🇮🇳❤️ #AsianGames2026 #TeamIndia #IndianAthletics #4x400Relay [ India's women's 4x400m relay quartet won gold at the Asian Games 2026]

A Mouse and a Deer..both in single beautiful package ! 😯😯😯❕
This mouse deer is actually not a deer. Nor is it a mouse ! It is a little-known gem of biodiversity, the Indian spotted chevrotain, Moschiola indica, one of the smallest hoofed mammals on earth. Listed under Schedule I of India’s Wild Life Protection Act, it receives the country’s highest level of legal protection for wildlife. Barely 25–30 cm at the shoulder and weighing around 3 kg, it belongs to an ancient lineage of ruminants. With no horns or antlers, this shy forest dweller is mainly active at night. The Western Ghats are its principal stronghold, though it also occurs elsewhere in peninsular India. This shy little animal feeds on fallen fruits and other plant material, yet much about its life in the wild remains unknown. Hunting, snares and the loss and degradation of its forest habitat threaten its survival. What a wonderful planet we have inherited. It’s full of surprises 😊 Photo by Chandrasekar Das #indianMouseDeer #chevrotain

Three races. Three medals. One historic record. Vithya Ramraj has had quite a run at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya. It started with silver in the mixed 4x400m relay, where her late surge helped India finish second in 3:14.46. Four days later, she stepped onto the track for the 400m hurdles. She wasn't chasing a medal. She was chasing a number: 54 seconds. She clocked 54.75 seconds, won bronze and — more importantly — broke PT Usha's 42-year-old national record of 55.42 seconds. And then came the relay. On Tuesday, Vithya was part of the Indian women's 4x400m relay team alongside Kiran Pahal, Machettira Poovamma and Prachi. The quartet clocked 3:29.69 to win gold, giving India its first athletics gold of the Games. So Vithya leaves Nagoya with: 🥇 Gold — Women's 4x400m relay 🥈 Silver — Mixed 4x400m relay 🥉 Bronze — Women's 400m hurdles 🏆 New national record — 54.75 seconds And perhaps the most interesting part? She says she wasn't chasing the medals at all. She was chasing her own time. #AsianGames #IndianAthletics #VithyaRamraj #TrackAndField #womaninsports [42 years after PT Usha, Vithya Ramraj finally rewrites India’s 400m hurdles record]
