उत्तर प्रदेश में विधान परिषद के चुनाव की मतदाता सूची में नाम जुड़वाने के लिए पहली बार ऑनलाइन रजिस्ट्रेशन की सुविधा दी गई है । किसी भी कार्य को पहली बार करने में ग़लतियाँ होने की संभावना रहती है। मतदाता सूची 14,81,310 प्रविष्टियों में से कुल 158 ऐसी प्रविष्टियाँ हैं जिनमें मतदाताओ अथवा उनके संबंधियों के नाम अजीब प्रतीत हो रहे हैं। इन नामों का अजीबोगरीब होना इसी प्रकार की एक गलती है। सॉफ़्टवेयर द्वारा अंग्रेज़ी में टाइप किए गए नामों को हिंदी में ट्रांसलिटरेट करना था परंतु संभवत किसी त्रुटि की वजह से ट्रांसलेट कर दिया। उदाहरण के तौर पर किसी मतदाता का नाम रामहित यादव है तो उसको अंग्रेज़ी में टाइप करने समय यदि त्रुटिवश Ramhit Yadav के स्थान पर
Ram hit Yadav टाइप कर दिया तो सॉफ्टवेयर द्वारा इसे ‘राम ने यादव को मारा’ ट्रांसलेट कर दिया। इस प्रकार उत्पन्न हुई ग़लतियाँ को एडिट कर सुधार करने की व्यवस्था थी परंतु जहाँ लोग सावधान नहीं रहे उस जगह इस प्रकार की ग़लतियाँ बनी रही। पिता के स्थान पर B Com टाइप करना मानवीय भूल अथवा लापरवाही है।मंडलायुक्त इस मतदाता सूची में निर्वाचन रजिस्ट्रेशन अधिकारी (ERO) हैं तथा संबंधित जिले के जिला अधिकारी AERO हैं । मतदाता सूची को सभी ग़लतियों से मुक्त रखना इनकी ज़िम्मेदारी है। उनसे इस संबंध में स्पष्टीकरण मांगा गया है। मतदाताओ को इस गलती की वजह से कोई परेशानी न हो इसके निर्देश जिला अधिकारियों को दे दिए गए हैं ।

Security called me at 6:12 AM today.
"Patch every PHP server immediately."
I asked what happened.
"Two critical vulnerabilities. Remote code execution. No authentication required."
Cool.
How many PHP servers do we have?
According to inventory: 12
According to reality:
Nobody knows.
We found one running WordPress.
Three running old internal tools.
One under someone's desk.
Two inside vendor appliances.
A forgotten employee directory from 2016.
And a server named:
PHP-OLD-DO-NOT-TOUCH
Naturally, that one runs payroll exports.
Then we found a PHP 5.6 box.
I asked who owned it.
The documentation said:
BRIAN.
Brian left in 2019.
We called Brian.
He said:
"Oh wow, that's still running?"
Excellent.
By 8 AM, leadership joined the incident call.
CEO:
"Can hackers actually get in?"
Security:
"Potentially yes."
CEO:
"Without a password?"
Security:
"Yes."
CEO:
"Then why do WE need passwords?"
Not the lesson.
Finance asked if we could wait until the weekend to patch because downtime affects revenue.
Security explained that the alternative was letting strangers execute code on our servers.
Finance asked for a cost comparison.
At 9:17, someone suggested temporarily taking the vulnerable websites offline.
Marketing refused.
"Our campaign is live."
So for the next hour, the company officially decided maintaining a landing page for 20% off webinar registration was more important than preventing remote server takeover.
We finally patched everything we could find.
Then our scanner discovered another PHP server.

Nobody knows what it does.
Nobody owns it.
Nobody can shut it down.
But every time we block network access, the warehouse stops printing shipping labels.
Security has classified it as critical infrastructure.
It is running PHP 5.4.
The vulnerability has existed longer than half our employees.
The emergency patch took four hours.
Finding out what PHP actually runs took eleven.
The internet isn't held together with code.
It's held together with servers everyone is afraid to turn off.

I heard a fascinating story about human behaviour today.
A tour guide at a historic castle was getting very high ratings from tourists.
They went to see what he was doing differently.
On several of the rooms he had used the red velvet ropes to block the doors.
These were normally used when the rooms were being repaired or cleaned. He had put them up at the beginning of each day.
During g the tour he would look around and say to the group “would you like to have a quick look in here?” And they would say yes in hushed tones.
He would ceremoniously unclip the rope and let them through into the room. A room that was always a normal part of every tour.
This simple little bit of theatre made people love the tour that much more.
Humans love what we can’t have.
