ALT The KSU Executive grieves with our student community for all lives lost in the escalation in conflict between Palestinians and Israel. We know that there are members of our union who have friends and family who are directly affected, and our priority is to express our support for all affected students, particularly those who are Israeli, Palestinian, and throughout the diaspora. We condemn antisemitism and Islamophobia and affirm that we are first and foremost here to support all of our students.

ALT Any students whose mental health is affected or need someone to talk to are encouraged to reach out to mental health supports, including those for students and others specific to their community. If you want help in finding resources, please feel free to reach out to [email protected].

ALT The KSU is not a frontline mental health resource, but all experiences will be respected and heard in all KSU spaces. Many people are grieving, and we know that grief is complicated. We hope that students will show each other compassion at this time, and your union will do the same.

ALT The KSU stands against colonization in all of its forms, and we call for liberation of the Palestinian people. We mourn for innocent lives taken by the Hamas attack and the military response, and condemn this violence and loss of life. While this statement cannot capture the full nuance of the situation, we wish for an end to the violence and civilian casualties. In solidarity, The KSU Executive

ALT KSU letterhead with navy blue text on a white background that reads: In the summers of both 2021 and 2022, the HRM forcefully and violently evicted unhoused individuals from recognized and stable locations and communities. The violence enacted is more than just the physical assault on community members: displacing and removing people from secure locations, when there are too few sanctioned shelter locations or existing shelters for people to turn to, is violence. The challenge of finding a safe location to sleep without being at risk of further physical harm or harassment is no small task.

ALT KSU letterhead with navy blue text on a white background that reads: The HRM did not provide adequate alternatives for the residents of People’s Park, in ways that extend far beyond the physical location. The HRM designated temporary shelter sites that could provide a location for up to 32 tents. These shelter locations were restricted to tents only, rather than temporary wooden shelters which had been constructed at People’s Park and other locations; additionally, they were to be patrolled by a compliance force to ensure that these locations followed the designated rules and capacity limits, with the possibility of Halifax Regional Police officers being brought in to aid with any noncompliance.

ALT KSU letterhead with navy blue text on a white background that reads: More unsanctioned settlements have emerged since the evictions, as was inevitable. The King’s Students’ Union demands that the Halifax Regional Municipality and Halifax Regional Police not engage in these recurring violent evictions. We also call on members of our community to stand in solidarity with our unhoused neighbors, prove aid and support in whatever ways you are able, and to treat all of our unhoused neighbors with the respect and dignity that every human being deserves. Otherizing and dehumanizing unhoused individuals is the rhetorical violence which encourages physical violence, and the result has been seen in the recent high-profile murder of Jordan Neely in the U.S.A. This is not an isolated incident.

ALT KSU letterhead with navy blue text on a white background that reads: Taking action is not always comfortable or pleasant. Supporting communities may cause disruption to established neighbourhoods. This is not an excuse to treat people seeking shelter, safety, and security as any less than the rest of a community, nor is it a reason to deny what shelters and communities they have made in the face of the resistance they have experienced. Yours in solidarity, The King’s Students’ Union

ALT Content Warning: Mentions of sexual assault and abuse. Statement following the recent civil lawsuit filed against the University of King's College regarding the actions of Wayne Hankey.

ALT We the King’s Students’ Union stand in line with our statement from March 2023 in regards to the final report of the independent review of Wayne Hankey’s actions. In light of the recent filing of a second civil lawsuit against the University of King’s College, we wish to reiterate our solidarity with the victim/survivors and our support for whatever route of action or justice they decide to take. Justice does not end with a report, and we hope that this process and any others they choose to pursue can help them. We wish those pursuing legal action peace and hope they are able to heal.

ALT As stated previously, if you wish to come forward to speak to the Union about its prior actions and role during Hankey’s time in the King’s community, please contact our Coordinator, Cameron Pye, at [email protected] or phone 902-429-3399. If there is anything the Union can do for you, such as directing you to resources, coordinating with an active listener, or if you have questions, please contact our External VP, Terra Carter, at [email protected] for guidance.
