This was my third @Principles_1st event here in Phoenix. Each one gives me more hope there are enough good people on both sides of the aisle working together to restore the norms and respect for the rule of law that made the U.S. the envy of the world.
What an amazing turnout here in Phoenix, Arizona! These are people who stand up for putting their #PrinciplesFirst

The best TV show of the 21st century is 30 Rock. Prestige is fake. Tina Fey should be carved into a mountain. We can debate her flaws the way we debate Abraham Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus.
This has been a great event. Really appreciate @stephen_richer noting the importance of trusted news reporting during elections, including citing @thedispatch as one of those he trusts for thorough reporting.
Our virtual event with the Advancing Liberty Coalition with featured guest, @stephen_richer is starting now. Learn how to be a trusted neighbor today and help defend democracy block by block.

This is the second year in a row Iβve traveled to the U.K. to cross an item off my bucket list. Last year, it was seeing @oasis at Wembley. This year, attending @TheOpen .
With @McIlroyRory out of it, Iβm pulling for @Samburns66, whoβs deserving of being a major champion. β at Southport, England
Thanks to @brianJschulz and @JassonPatterson for joining me on the trip!

This is a great point. The finale was amazing. Twitter is The Upside Down. #StrangerThings
I watched the Stranger Things finale today in a packed theater with my family. It was quite a scene. There were tons of people wearing merch, just so excited to see how the thing ends. And by the time the credits rolled, it was pretty clear that everyone loved it. There were big cheers, big laughs and lots of tears (not from me tho I'm tough π€). I talked to my real life friends afterwards and they also seemed to enjoy it. I was honestly moved by how cool of a moment this was. An original idea that grew into a worldwide phenomenon that so many people loved. AND they gave us a solid ending. How cool is that? How rare is that? Will we ever see something like that again?
Then I check Twitter...
And it was just lots of negative commentary from people who seem to get off on hating on things that normal people enjoy. And that's when it hit me.
Twitter is our upside down. It's a lot like real life but much darker and full of negativity. Trolls are demogorgons. Elon is Vecna. And all of us are just trying to live our lives in peace with our friends.
In conclusion: Stranger Things is a really fun show and I'm grateful for all the good times it gave my family. I honestly think we grew closer bc of it. Shoutout everyone who was involved in making it.
PS: I'm clearly Steve in the analogy above.

Nine Republican Montana state senators voted with 18 Democrats to form a new majority to pass major legislation last session, undermining the influence of the ultra-conservative caucus of the stateβs GOP.
Dubbed βThe Nasty Nine,β the Republican senators were censured by their own party, stripped of their GOP status and cut off from voting rights at their partyβs conventions in June.
Some of those senators β and two of the Democrats they voted with β spoke with @jolingkent about what they accomplished: βWe voted for lower income tax relief. We invested in infrastructure. We invested in the future of Montana.β

Friends-
This is a tough note to write, but since a bunch of you have started to suspect something, Iβll cut to the chase: Last week I was diagnosed with metastasized, stage-four pancreatic cancer, and am gonna die.
Advanced pancreatic is nasty stuff; itβs a death sentence. But I already had a death sentence before last week too β we all do.
Iβm blessed with amazing siblings and half-a-dozen buddies that are genuinely brothers. As one of them put it, βSure, youβre on the clock, but weβre all on the clock.β Death is a wicked thief, and the bastard pursues us all.
Still, Iβve got less time than Iβd prefer. This is hard for someone wired to work and build, but harder still as a husband and a dad. I canβt begin to describe how great my people are. During the past year, as weβd temporarily stepped back from public life and built new family rhythms, Melissa and I have grown even closer β and that on top of three decades of the best friend a man could ever have. Seven months ago, Corrie was commissioned into the Air Force and sheβs off at instrument and multi-engine rounds of flight school. Last week, Alex kicked butt graduating from college a semester early even while teaching gen chem, organic, and physics (sheβs a freak). This summer, 14-year-old Breck started learning to drive. (Okay, weβve been driving off-book for six years β but now weβve got paper to make it street-legal.) I couldnβt be more grateful to constantly get to bear-hug this motley crew of sinners and saints.
Thereβs not a good time to tell your peeps youβre now marching to the beat of a faster drummer β but the season of advent isnβt the worst. As a Christian, the weeks running up to Christmas are a time to orient our hearts toward the hope of whatβs to come.
Not an abstract hope in fanciful human goodness; not hope in vague hallmark-sappy spirituality; not a bootstrapped hope in our own strength (what foolishness is the evaporating-muscle I once prided myself in). Nope β often we lazily say βhopeβ when what we mean is βoptimism.β To be clear, optimism is great, and itβs absolutely necessary, but itβs insufficient. Itβs not the kinda thing that holds up when you tell your daughters youβre not going to walk them down the aisle. Nor telling your mom and pops theyβre gonna bury their son.
A well-lived life demands more reality β stiffer stuff. Thatβs why, during advent, even while still walking in darkness, we shout our hope β often properly with a gravelly voice soldiering through tears.
Such is the calling of the pilgrim. Those who know ourselves to need a Physician should dang well look forward to enduring beauty and eventual fulfillment. That is, we hope in a real Deliverer β a rescuing God, born at a real time, in a real place. But the eternal city β with foundations and without cancer β is not yet.
Remembering Isaiahβs prophecies of whatβs to come doesnβt dull the pain of current sufferings. But it does put it in eternityβs perspective:
βWhen we've been there 10,000 yearsβ¦We've no less days to sing God's praise.β
Iβll have more to say. Iβm not going down without a fight. One sub-part of Godβs grace is found in the jawdropping advances science has made the past few years in immunotherapy and more. Death and dying arenβt the same β the process of dying is still something to be lived. Weβre zealously embracing a lot of gallows humor in our house, and Iβve pledged to do my part to run through the irreverent tape.
But for now, as our family faces the reality of treatments, but more importantly as we celebrate Christmas, we wish you peace: βThe people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawnedβ¦.For to us a son is givenβ (Isaiah 9).
With great gratitude, and with gravelly-but-hopeful voices,
Ben β and the Sasses
