Raimundo Madrazo y Garreta belonged to one of Spain’s most prominent artistic dynasties in the nineteenth century. He spent much of his life in Paris, and his work aligns with that of the modern Spanish school artists, a group that revolutionized the art markets in both Europe and the United States. This elegant composition, “Woman in a Garden,” exemplifies the small decorative paintings that were very popular in both France and Spain during the late nineteenth century. The artist depicts a young woman, sheltered by the privacy of her garden, lost in thought, and dressed in the Spanish style with a mantilla and a flounced skirt. The sitter for this painting was the French model Aline Masson, who appears in several of Madrazo’s paintings created over a fifteen-year period.
