Shawn Kemp says his Sonics GM told him he’d be the highest paid player on the team if he outplayed Michael Jordan. He did it in the Finals, but the phone never rang. “I can remember the conversation. The general manager came to me and he was like, ‘Well, if you want to be one of the highest paid, then all you got to do is go out there and outplay Michael Jordan.’” “And I was like, ‘Okay.’” “Well, a couple years later, we playing in the championship. And I looked at it as an opportunity. As an opportunity for me to shine, and it’s also opportunity for you to make more money.” “If I can outscore Michael Jordan in the series and also play well and help our team achieve what we trying to achieve, then I’m going to put myself in a pretty good position.” “Well, I played well. Done little things. But when it came time for payday, there was no phone call.” “When you lose a series, that’s what they do to you sometimes, man. They kind of forgot about that conversation beforehand.”

I'm looking forward to joining fellow HBCU leaders, alumni, and supporters during HBCU Legacy Week on the Vineyard! It's always an honor to connect with our Viking family and celebrate the enduring impact of our nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
