It's the end of an era! History was made Friday night when the last ever train traveled over the Portal Bridge in New Jersey, officially ending decades of delays for Amtrak and @NJTRANSIT customers with the retirement of the 116-year-old bridge forever. And it’s fitting it was a NextGen Acela train, as it’s truly out with the old and in with the new.

Today, a single bridge supports Amtrak, VRE, and freight rail service between Northern Virginia and DC, serving approximately 2 million Amtrak and 3 million VRE passengers each year.
Several Amtrak representatives recently toured @VaPassengerRail’s Long Bridge Project site, which by the end of 2030 will create a new two-track rail bridge, along with two new bicycle and pedestrian bridges. The project will increase capacity and reliability along a corridor that currently operates at 98% capacity during peak hours.
It was great to see the progress firsthand! Thank you to VPRA for hosting and for the continued partnership on this transformative project that will help improve rail service up and down the East Coast. We're excited to see the progress continue as we work together to deliver a new era of rail in America.

Today, FRA Administrator David Fink joined @USDOT Deputy Secretary Steven Bradbury, @Amtrak President Roger Harris, Siemens Mobility CEO Tobais Bauer, and State Department of Transportation representatives from Washington and Oregon to celebrate the unveiling of the new Amtrak Airo trainsets. The new trainsets will help transform intercity passenger rail service by offering unparalleled amenities to passengers not only in the Pacific Northwest, but eventually along the Northeast Corridor, and nationwide.
FRA Administrator Fink said, “Investing in a world-class passenger rail experience is a top priority of ours, along with ensuring safety.”
The Airo Trainset Program is supporting good American jobs across multiple states, and will ensure the Amtrak workforce is operating modern, safe, efficient, and reliable equipment.

Thank you to FRA Administrator Fink for recently touring our B&P Tunnel Replacement Program construction site, where major utility relocations, bridge reconstruction, and other work is underway.
The new, modern passenger train tunnel, commuter rail station, and other associated infrastructure improvements will deliver better service across America's busiest passenger railroad for generations to come.
We look forward to continuing working closely with Administrator Fink and his staff to advance this critical investment.
FRA Administrator David Fink recently toured the new Frederick Douglass Tunnel in Maryland. Once completed, it will replace the Baltimore & Potomac Tunnel and allow for electrified Amtrak services at speeds up to 100 MPH.
