HALF-A-BILLION 🤯 Remember: Police liability payouts come out of the General Fund, NOT the police department's operating budget. This is why other city services like street services, animal services, transportation, youth development, & audits got cut. latimes.com/california/story…

It’s amazing people believe a little cloud seeding caused the catastrophic floods in Texas, but think that pumping trillions of tons of greenhouse gases into our atmosphere hasn’t caused climate change.

I am quite positive on technology innovation in general and am mostly blown away by the talent in Silicon Valley. But it is possibly the single worst place on the planet to develop ideas about urban land use and transportation, because it is shambolically horrible at both.

See also, Google’s Bayview campus, which is covered in solar panels, captures and recycles water, has thermal piles for temperature control, has acres of native landscape… yet is miles from housing or transit, and has thousands of parking spots.

Elon Musk and Donald Trump have the same BS degree from the exact same school
Someone has to say it: Elon Musk has lied for 27 years about his credentials. He does not have a BS in Physics, or any technical field. Did not get into a PhD program. Dropped out in 1995 & was illegal. Later, investors quietly arranged a diploma - but not in science. 🧵1/
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The University of Pennsylvania considers Musk to be a graduate of both the economics department and the physics department. "Elon Musk earned a B.A. in physics and a B.S. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania. The degrees were awarded on May 19, 1997." -Penn, 2019 snopes.com/fact-check/mus…

Lol Musk is upset because NASA just pulled off hitting an asteroid, while all his products ever hit are pedestrians.

Congratulations on successfully crashing a spacecraft into an asteroid!

I recently had to teach spontaneous symmetry breaking. Did you know that there was a connection to nonequilibrium physics? I didn't. A little thread. 1/N

Between 1997-2008, voters in Los Angeles approved a series of bonds dedicating around $20 billion in funding to the construction, expansion, and renovation of hundreds of schools. What was the impact of this massive investment in public goods? Julien Lafortune and I investigated.

1/ A metal is a very quantum-mechanical object. Just about all its properties arise from the quantum mechanics of a dense collection of free electrons. So how can we see its quantumness in the electrical resistance? This is a thread about the phenomenon of "weak localization"
