how long my PI thinks an experiment will take to prepare = x hours
how long i think an experiment will realistically take to prepare = 1.2x hours
how long it will actually be = 4x^2 + 2(# of meetings i have that week) + 0.5(current anxiety on a 10 point scale)
i think in the scope of science twitter this is kind of baby stuff, but if any of you know anything about me at this point it must be that i am mostly a baby.

So incredibly proud and excited to debut the first issue of Ginkgo's annual magazine, Grow. Synthetic biology is beautiful, complex, messy, and full of what if's. We wanted to create a brand that showed people that.

I’ve hired a few people in my time.
I’ve never been disappointed by hiring someone who is less technical but is a great human who cares for others.
I can teach tech pretty easily.
But boy have I seen people who are strong technical people with toxic attitudes destroy a team.

1/ A thread about the big exoplanet news that was announced today, which—to be perfectly honest—was challenging for me to parse and report.. theatlantic.com/science/arch…
TIL about Ben Barres, renowned neurobiologist & first trans member of the National Academy of Sciences!! Reading about his life, his work, and his mentoring is extremely moving. How can we lbgtq+ scientists keep his legacy alive?

Look at all the colorful bacteria! These chromoproteins absorb visible light to give strong colors in ambient light. Anthony Forster's lab engineered 14 chromoprotein sequences for expression in E. coli. Find plasmids here: hubs.ly/H0kfYCn0

Questions I ask myself when I notice I’m procrastinating:
1) “Why am I avoiding this?” (Is it boring? Am I anxious? Confused on what to do next? Afraid of failure?)
2) “What’s it gonna take to get me to do it?”
3) “How good am I gonna feel when it’s finally done?”
