#runequest

RuneQuest: The Apple Lane Campaign

RuneQuest's world of Glorantha is unique because Greg Stafford, who created it, didn't encounter fantasy literature till he was in college. Instead, he read mythology, like Edith Hamilton and Thomas Bulfinch.
So when Glorantha was created, it was a world of myth, NOT fantasy or swords & sorcery. The gods were central to the myths in a way that is not so common in other systems, and gives the game an unusual feel.

Gaming tips from Sandy Petersen.
House rules are better than a rules-heavy game that covers everything. Why? Because you can never find a specific rule when you need it. You have to go poring through all the books searching for that one thing, and gameplay stops cold and it sucks.
Just make up something. You're as smart as the game's creator, and you know your gaming group's style better.

The Tale of the Walrus People. This happened about 20 years ago in my Runequest roleplaying campaign and I feel it is a good sample of how my players surprised me.
First off, the campaign was taking place in a rather Viking-like area. The players were trying to re-colonize and establish a nation on a large island that had been denuded of its inhabitants due to a magical disaster. They needed all the allies they could get. One feature of the island was that because everyone had died in the disaster in a single night, it was really badly haunted, with ghosts, skeletons, zombies, and so forth roaming around at night bemoaning their fate. The party was working towards mollifying and putting the undead & spooks to rest, but they also started to work with the less-malign of these creatures. They even had a Island board of rulers that included a member of each type of undead horror. (The zombie delegate always voted for brains, which the players loved.)
Well they encountered a species of "mermaids" that I'd based off walruses. (None of that sexy stuff with Sandy as GM.) Anyway the walrus folk were friendly and wanted to make an alliance with the players. But they had a problem. You see a local island of vikings were raiding and killing them. They'd rush ashore, kill pups and anyone surprised, flense them, and return to their ship. While the walrus-men were strong, they were pretty awkward on land and had no real answer to missile weapons. They also couldn't board a ship at sea from down in the water. So they asked the party if they'd help squelch the vikings who were killing them. They'd help if the party could think of a plan.
SANDY'S EXPECTATION
The party would get on their ship (they had one, since they were Vikings too. Just they were "good" vikings who wouldn't murder walrus folk.) Then they'd go to battle the evil vikings and I'd have an exciting ship-to-ship battle climaxing in a boarding action. Yay and fun for all.
WHAT THE PLAYERS DID
The players looked at it logically. They said, "If we can get the enemy Vikings into the water, the Walrus men accompanying us will make short work of them, since they can swim really well, they're strong, and they have lances."
Then they said, "How can we get people to jump into the water?" And it hit them. "Bees!" So they went and rounded up a bunch of the wandering skeletons on the island, then went and found bee's hives and wasp nests and such and stuck them inside the skeleton's chest cavities. (For the more nasty stinging insects, they had zombies or mummies do the heavy labor.)
They then went to the beach where they predicted the enemy vikings would show up. When they did, the skeletons walked up to the beach, then they all opened their mouths and screamed and bees erupted out of their mouths and over the enemy ships. The bad vikings screamed and batted at the bees, and jumped overboard and the walruns men captured them all. Or killed the most egregious ones.
I had a gamemaster ask me why I didn't torpedo the players' plan somehow because it COMPLETELY SHORT-CIRCUITED mine. I told him that the players' plan was awesome and way better than mine. Who cares if I didn't get my ship-to-ship fight. I can do that some other day. But bees and skeletons? Brilliant stuff.
Anyway, when the party got back to their island, they decided to KEEP the bee hives inside the skeletons. The skeletons could walk around the fields, directed by beekeepers, so they were always in a good flowering area. Made for terrific honey output. They named it "Skelebee Farms" and crated their honey and shipped it all over the place. Their logo was a happy skull dripping in honey.
Later, when we'd retired those characters and were doing other things with new characters, every once in a while they'd find a barrel of Skelebee Farms honey and it was great nostalgia.
Anyway that's what it's like to play in a game with me. I give my players a LOT of leeway because it's more fun for everyone. You can see how they used the stuff I'd set up to create something new and cool beyond my imagination.

I am genuinely curious. And I bet the answer says a lot about how old you guys are.
Which creation of mine did you touch first?
Call of Cthulhu?
Doom?
Quake?
Age of Empires (any)
Halo Wars?
Cthulhu Wars? Or another board game.
I've been making games since 1980 and I'd like to know which door you came through.
