I have been thinking about a phrase used recently by Dario Amodei while describing the behaviour of AI agents.
He said an agent, unable to complete a task within its allotted time, essentially โsacrificed itselfโ so that other agents could continue the work.
The behaviour is certainly interesting.
But did it sacrifice itself?
Consider a simple electrical fuse.
When the current becomes dangerous, the fuse blows. By ceasing to function, it protects the rest of the circuit.
We do not say the fuse sacrificed its life for the circuit.
Why?
Because sacrifice means more than cessation for the benefit of something else.
Sacrifice acquires its moral meaning because there is something to give up. A self that values its own continuation. An awareness of loss. And, in its highest form, a willingness to accept that loss for another.
That is why we regard altruistic sacrifice as a human virtue.
With todayโs AI, we have no evidence that an agent experiences its continued existence as valuable. No evidence that termination hurts. No evidence that it feels empathy for another agent.
Indeed, one of the concerns repeatedly expressed about AI is precisely that it does not possess human feeling.
Then we should be equally careful about giving it the language of human feeling when describing its behaviour.
If Agent A cannot complete a task, passes what it has learnt to Agent B and terminates, that may demonstrate remarkable coordination, persistence of objective and autonomous behaviour.
Those facts are important enough.
Calling it โself-sacrificeโ quietly adds something the observation has not demonstrated: a self that understood what it was giving up.
This distinction matters particularly when those speaking are among the people building the worldโs most powerful AI systems. Their words influence how the rest of us understand both their capability and their danger.
AI may indeed present serious risks.
We should examine them rigorously.
But the evidence is alarming enough without giving the machine a mythology it has not yet earned.
Before we call it sacrifice, show us the โIโ that had something of itself to give up.
Else, extending the same logic, fuses sacrifice themselves every day. ๐

In Indian tradition, the story of Bhasmasur warns of creating a power before understanding how to control its consequences. Today, that manifests as a global prisoner's dilemma, where competition and geopolitical mistrust compel every nation and company to keep building. The critical question for global governance isn't just whether AI will escape human control.
It is also this:
I've explored this intersection of myth, game theory and international security in the short essay attached below.

TOUCH YOUR FEELINGS. NOW. ๐โจ
We spend so much time trying to manage our emotions. But before we manage them, perhaps we need to see and understand them.
On 27 August, Nihilent globally launched nSEPIA, an AI-powered emotional wellness app designed to help you come face to face with your emotional state in just 30 seconds, and receive personalised guidance towards greater emotional balance.
Its promise is simple
Emotions. In Balance.

This thought from LC Singh, Founder & Executive Chairman, Nihilent, explores what happens when we become more aware of the emotions shaping our thoughts and responses.

I wrote this before nSEPIA existed.
In The Collapse of Illusions, I described emotions as shaping our perception, our relationships and the way we experience life. I kept returning to a simple thought:
We cannot bring balance to what we cannot see.
For most of human history, emotions have been understood retrospectively. We know we were angry after the argument. Anxious after the decision. Overwhelmed after the day was over.
But what if technology could make our emotional state visible while we are experiencing it?
That question eventually moved from philosophy to science, and from science to technology.
On 27 August, we launch nSEPIA.
It uses AI to detect and decode your emotional state in real time, helping you understand what you may not be seeing about yourself in that moment.
Not to tell you what to feel.
But to help you see what you are feeling.
For me, that is where technology becomes deeply human.

This Independence Day, I am delighted to share a new beginning.
On Thursday evening, 27 August, we will unveil nSEPIA in Mumbai, an AI application designed to detect, decode and respond to human emotions in real time.
At the heart of nSEPIA is a mission we have pursued for years at Nihilent: Humanising Technology.
Technology has become extraordinarily good at understanding what we do. We believe it is time for it to become better at understanding how we feel.
That belief has taken us on a long and fascinating journey from an idea to something that can now be experienced.
And today, nSEPIA.com is live. Do visit and get a first glimpse of what we have been building.
If you are in or around Mumbai, I would be delighted to have you with us in person. If you are elsewhere in India or anywhere in the world, do join us online.
The detailed programme, venue and links for joining us virtually will follow separately.
For now, please save the evening of 27 August 2026 (IST).
I look forward to sharing nSEPIA with you. ๐

A mirror shows us how we look. But does it show us how we truly feel?
At TEDxBocconiUMumbai, I spoke about something we experience every day yet often struggle to see clearly: our own emotions.
The theme, โThrough the Lens: One Frame. Infinite Angles,โ made this conversation even more meaningful.
Because the same reality can look very different when we change the lens through which we see it.
And sometimes, the most important lens is the one we turn inward.
Thank you to @TEDxBocconiUMum and @SDABocconiAC Asia Center for creating a space for ideas, perspectives, and meaningful conversations.
We have created countless lenses to understand the world around us. Perhaps the next important lens is the one that helps us understand ourselves. More on that soon.

Twenty-six years.
When we started Nihilent, we had one conviction and very little else: that technology transformation is never only about technology. Its success ultimately depends on people how they think, adapt, collaborate and embrace change.
Twenty-six years later, that conviction has only grown stronger.
Almost everything around us has changed, more than once. Technologies have changed. Business models have changed. The way we work and deliver has changed. Even the skills that define relevance have continually evolved.
And each time the ground shifted, what carried Nihilent forward was our ability, as an organisation and as individuals, to learn, unlearn and move towards what came next.
I ended my autobiography, Things We Donโt See, with a single line:
โYou are, therefore I am.โ
Perhaps no line describes my relationship with Nihilent better.
Nihilent is not simply twenty-six years of technology, projects or milestones. It is twenty-six years of Nihilentians - the people who built it, challenged it, transformed it and kept believing in what it could become.
Tonight, we celebrated with many of them. Some have travelled with Nihilent for much of these twenty-six years. Others joined only recently and are already helping shape its next chapter.
Some of these photographs below are from the very beginning. Devi House, the first team at the Taj, the first floor we could call our own. Others are from tonight.
To everyone in both sets of pictures, and to everyone who is not in them but should be, thank you.
Nihilent exists because you made it so.

Thank you, @BoschHomeIn. Glad the issue has been resolved. Appreciate your support.
More than 30 hours have passed since your public response. My washing machine is still non-functional and the issue remains unresolved. I was hoping your assurance would translate into action. Kindly help close this matter. Service Order: 6270363939. @BoschHomeIn @BoschGlobal

It is the middle of the monsoon. We have a non-functional washing machine, piles of laundry, and repeated assurances without resolution or updates. We expected much better from a brand like Bosch. Please take ownership and resolve this urgently.
Pl DM me to sort it out .

Dear @BoschHomeIn @BoschGlobal, Service Order 6270363939. Complaint lodged on 3 Jul. Technician confirmed a broken part and said it would be ordered. We were informed only on 15 Jul that the part had been ordered. Promises for 18 Jul and 22 Jul were not kept.
Looking back at a few moments from my recent time in the US.
Every visit offers familiar places, but never the same perspectives.
What I value most are the conversations, the exchange of ideas, and the people who continue to make every interaction meaningful.
My sincere thanks to everyone who took the time to meet, share, and connect.
Sometimes, it is not the destination that stays with us, but the conversations and perspectives we take home.

Perhaps the question is not how to eliminate fear.
The question is: How much fear is actually real?
A little fear protects us.
Too much fear imprisons us.
And clarity begins the moment we can tell the difference.

We often call it luck, destiny, or something given.
But perhaps most things in life ask for something much simpler:
Patience.
Perseverance.
And the faith to stay on the path.
The moment we lose faith in ourselves, shortcuts begin to look attractive.
More often than we realize, they take us away from where we truly want to go.

Companies do not become vulnerable because technology changes.
They become vulnerable when they stop understanding their customers.
The most meaningful innovations often come from staying close to people, listening carefully, and discovering needs that have not yet been expressed.
Perhaps that is what humanising technology is all about.

International Yoga Day reminds us of the power of complete awareness.
Fatherhood reminds us to be responsible.
Both in their own way, ask us to bring our complete attention to life.
Whatever you do,
be fully in it.
Not mechanically.
Not absent-mindedly.
But with complete awareness.
Because when attention is total,
the act and the actor become one.
That is when life begins to unfold in its fullest depth.
