UK crime was four times higher when Oasis first played Knebworth than at last year’s reunion gigs.
The collapse of crime and safer streets is one of the biggest stories of our time.
But one almost never told - or believed.

What distinguishes the 1% from the merely affluent? How about having a third child.
New post on a topic I've long been fascinated by (the economics and financing of having a third kid) where I finally felt bold enough to go into the latest SCF microdata to get a good answer. /1

Over a million people – more than 15 per cent of Lebanon's population – have been displaced from the south in the past two years of fighting between Hezbollah and Israel, and Lebanon's government faces a long-term displacement crisis it can ill afford.
Statements from Israeli officials suggest that up to 600,000 people could be prevented from returning if Israel does not withdraw from the 'Yellow Line' buffer zone, south of the Litani river. And this is unlikely to happen if Hezbollah refuses to give up its arms.

This is exactly right. I argued it throughout my tenure as UK Ambassador for Yemen. The Houthis could’ve been defeated 7 years ago, driven out of Hodeidah & land-locked in the northern highlands. The weakness of the international community has inflicted this current mess upon us.
Saudi Arabia Has Few Options as Houthis Aim at Heart of Its Ambitions.
What I take away from this: we should have helped the Saudis win — not demanded an end to their war. Flawed and messy as it was.

Awful stuff from Riyadh. 12 dead (so far) in yesterday's Houthi attack, including four Saudis, residents from America, Bangladesh, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan
More than 300 injured, some critically; parts of terminal roof fell on people inside wsj.com/world/middle-east/ir…

People have to understand that the Assad regime massacres targeting the Syrians in all sorts of ways including chemical attacks were wilfully ignored by large chunk of leftists in the West.
And the anger on this issue is still alive. Better to investigate and try to sympathise.

The flydubai story deserves a moment of reflection across Arab media.
Israeli outlets covered it with speed, presence, and a strong command of the details. Across our own countries, that coverage was then followed almost as if Israeli media had become the local press for the entire region. And, frankly, on some of the region’s most sensitive stories, that is increasingly what it has become.
This is bigger than comparing the performance of one newsroom with another. The more important question is what this says about our own ability to report the stories of our region, explain them, and place them in context before others do it for us.
Some of us failed more than others, but failure was the broader pattern.
The gap is enormous, and it deserves a serious conversation about the kind of regional media we want to build, and whether we are capable of becoming the natural reference point for understanding what happens in our own region.

For Goodwill Ambassador Theo James, the right to seek safety is personal.
His grandfather fled Nazi-occupied Greece and found refuge in Syria.
His family’s story reminds us of the world’s promise from 75 years ago: no one forced to flee should be denied the chance to find safety.
