photo:andrmoel/shutterstock

Scientists found the earliest known evidence of Down syndrome in a Neanderthal child nicknamed "Tina," who lived approximately 273,000 to 146,000 years ago.... . . . . Recent archaeological and genetic discoveries show that prehistoric societies provided care, support, and respectful burial practices to individuals with Down syndrome, demonstrating deep social integration and compassion long before modern medicine. Neanderthal Child "Tina" lived over 145,000 years ago during the Middle Paleolithic, Cova Negra cave in Valencia, Spain. Micro-CT scans of a temporal bone fragment revealed severe inner ear abnormalities (congenital pathology matching Down syndrome), causing profound hearing loss and disabling loss of balance/vertigo. The child survived to at least 6 years of age. Because a mother alone could not have managed intense round-the-clock care alongside daily foraging and survival tasks, the extended social group had to provide ongoing communal caretaking. Ancient DNA Analysis of Prehistoric Infants (Europe); dated 2,800 to 5,000 years ago (Bronze Age and Iron Age). Sites across Spain, Ireland, Bulgaria, and Greece. A 2024 study published in Nature Communications screened thousands of ancient genomes and identified cases of Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) and Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) in prehistoric infants and children. Rather than being discarded or isolated, these individuals were buried with special honors and care within settlements or near family dwellings. In Iron Age Spain, infants were found buried inside dwellings with grave goods, reflective of sacred status or equal membership within the community. The findings reinforce the concept of "cooperative care" in early humans and Neanderthals. Group survival relied heavily on social cohesion, empathy, and mutual support. Archaeological context indicates that individuals born with congenital disabilities were nurtured throughout their lives and treated with dignity in death across nomadic and early agricultural communities. #drthehistories
