And if you don’t want or care about other people wanting to know & love your publication, you’re racist & that’s on you. (7/7)
I like to ask myself & other white Editors, what would you think about the story if it was written about you from all of the different angles of all of the people in the world that you want to know & love your publication?
This can mean having to reflect through difficult mistakes, which can bring up emotions of shame, disappointment, fear of failure, guilt, and more, and that’s ok because people make mistakes & often, in that brief moment of honesty is where the beautiful stories come from.
Editors must also constantly be updating their editorial guidelines. If we can accept new words added to the dictionary every year because we have outgrown our language, then we can also accept that we have outgrown our editorial perspectives from this past.
If you are an Editor of any publication & are not regularly engaging in anti-oppression education, you are weakening the quality of your publication. There is no way you can write high-quality articles on current events without understanding the historical context.
What may seem as a story topic that is too intense, too casual, too complicated, etc. may actually be the most important story to someone else. Secondly, HOW we deem what is too intense, casual, uninteresting, complicated, etc. is entirely impacted by our biases. Let me clarify:
This is a great reminder for us white writers that we write from a certain perspective of privilege in a white supremacist system & if we actually believe in journalism to truly tell the stories of the world, then our work requires context & input from folks of color. (1/)
