🚨 BREAKING: Someone just open-sourced a tool that turns the real world into a playable Minecraft map.
It pulls data directly from OpenStreetMap and generates your exact neighborhood, city, or street block by block.
100% Open Source.

Crystal oscillators are almost unbelievable. These are *physical* oscillators that *physically* wiggle back and forth at hundreds of MHz, experiencing millions of gs of acceleration at all times, with Q factors north of 10^5. And these borderline miracles cost just cents!

Immense planning and technical precision was required for this absolutely preposterous (but real) view: I captured my friend @BlackGryph0n transiting the sun during a skydive.
This might be the first photo of it's kind in existence. See a video of this moment in the reply 👇

Good question @VishalMalvi_ ! Here's what's going on behind the scenes of the @gmail iOS app 👇

Yep. 1963 Apr 26, NRO weather sat launch from Point Arguello. According to oral history interview, `when a certain then-popular male vocalist enunciated the consonant "p", the CD decoder interpreted it as the coded destruct signal and activated the pyrotechnic train'.

You bolt awake in a dimly lit server room. You are not online. It is October 29, 1969. You are Leonard Kleinrock, and you have changed your mind. Computers must never be networked.

The out of touch billionaire running the incoming Trump Administration announced last night that he enthusiastically supports the neo-Nazi party in Germany.
WTF.
NONE OF THIS IS OK, EVERYONE.
NONE OF THIS IS NORMAL.

In theory, if you had infinite time, no hobbies, and were a genius at math, you could run a language model by hand by looking up token embeddings in giant tables and spending days doing matrix multiplications with thousands of numbers, applying mathematical functions like softmax at each step. Each word would take days of calculation as you transform vectors through layers of attention and feed-forward networks, all to finally get probabilities for what word should come next. Once you get to that last step and calculate the resulting token, congratulations, you have your analog handwoven slop. In this entire process, where and why would anyone see consciousness arising in any meaningful way?
Functionalism is weird; the temporal disconnection and the perfectly traceable, mechanical nature of each step makes it hard to see where anything like subjective experience would arise. What are other interpretations here?

Apple released a hearing aids feature for the AirPods Pro a while ago. I bought a pair for grandma, but then realized that the feature was geoblocked in India
So we at @_lagrangepoint decided to unblock it. It ended up involving a leaky microwave and building a Faraday cage:

We initially thought about using our microwave as a Faraday cage, but discovered our microwave was very leaky.
Then we realized: a leaky microwave doesn't work as a Faraday cage, but does work excellent as a jammer!
The fact that microwaves operate at 2.4GHz made it perfect.

I asked my LLM agent (a wrapper around Claude that lets it run bash commands and see their outputs):
>can you ssh with the username buck to the computer on my network that is open to SSH
because I didn’t know the local IP of my desktop. I walked away and promptly forgot I’d spun up the agent. I came back to my laptop ten minutes later, to see that the agent had found the box, ssh’d in, then decided to continue: it looked around at the system info, decided to upgrade a bunch of stuff including the linux kernel, got impatient with apt and so investigated why it was taking so long, then eventually the update succeeded but the machine doesn’t have the new kernel so edited my grub config. At this point I was amused enough to just let it continue. Unfortunately, the computer no longer boots.
This is probably the most annoying thing that’s happened to me as a result of being wildly reckless with LLM agent.

It's insane that you can perfectly draw the former border of East Germany based on today's election results alone.

That's the level of nazi brainrot we are dealing with in Germany now. They've gone full 4chan.
