Republicans are going to have a terrible night, and the simple reason why is that Trump has put up perhaps the worst *performance* this term of any president in a century or more. Remember that he entered with an actual mandate: the House and Senate, a popular vote victory and a swing-state sweep, and 6-3 Supreme Court. Democrats were afraid enough to vote for mild but real immigration restrictionist legislation in the Laken Riley Act. Everyone wondered how far the "Vibe Shift" would go. Trump managed to turn that into essentially zero durable wins whatsoever. He personally *hates* the very idea of legislation, the notion that he would have to spend time going back and forth with Congress, learning details and making compromises. So he simply didn't do it! He didn't make a compelling case for abolishing the filibuster. He didn't try communicating clearly to the public in support of popular bills to get to 60 votes. He just decided not to do it at all. So they passed an unpopular tax cut, some funding for ICE, and a sop to the crypto industry, and that was basically it. Least productive Congress in decades, due to the tastes of one man. Trump adopted one of the worst macro policies we've ever had: high deficits, high tariffs, and attacks on central bank independence. We managed to pay higher interest rates while still having high trade deficits AND weakening the dollar. Just a total failure. On immigration, perhaps THE signature issue, Trump essentially min-maxxed effectiveness and backlash. Instead of trying to leverage the political moment for new laws and a self-deportation agenda (that is, walling off the economy to remove the benefit of irregular presence in the US), he opted for a maximally aggressive approach. The administration spent attention, funds, legal manpower on stunts like deporting random people to Salvadoran prisons with essentially no due process. ICE and Border Patrol were encouraged to be aggressive and confrontational, which helped contribute to the shooting deaths of American protestors. It turns out, that's extremely unpopular! What about the approach of going after employers? The obvious vector? Trump hated that idea! He repeatedly has said he doesn't want to target businesses (especially farms) that use large amounts of illegal labor. This is just an incomprehensible position. Instead of charging a few dozen businessmen and removing the incentive for millions of illegal workers to be here, you arrest people off the street one by one at the cost of thousands of dollars in manpower per each, while their crying wives and kids post TikToks about it. Upshot on immigration: electoral strength turned into a crippling electoral weakness in exchange for deporting maybe 6% of the illegally present population. The tariffs were a total shitshow. Embarrassing rollout, no underlying theory of action at all. No targeted focus on key industries. Our country tariffed products we can't grow. We tariffed *inputs* of our own valuable exports. The schemes and amounts changed constantly, sending the stock market reeling and presenting scenes of chaos to the world. Trump's messaging throughout has been generationally bad. While facing nearly 2:1 unpopularity, he spends his days posting AI slop, saying he'll rename New Mexico or invade allies, among other bizarre remarks. He brags about a ballroom and a pool repainting while gas hits records. At no point has he ever attempted any kind of message discipline. Then there are the deeply unpopular attacks on rule of law, his "game-recognize-game" pardons for all manner of scammers and criminals, the crypto schemes that he and his family engage in, the evilly conceived and embarrassingly executed legal attacks on Comey, Jerome Powell, and others. With his monthslong stand on NOT releasing the Epstein files, he became maybe the first president ever to stake out a 99-1 issue on the 1% side. That's not even getting into Iran, DOGE, his candidate recruitment choices, or countless other things. Simply put: Trump has managed to royally screw up virtually every single facet of his presidency. It's been undeniable, voters have noticed, and there's really no escape from it. This is what the GOP base chose in early 2024, and this is the world they're living with now. Where they handed the reins of history to a fat, vain, washed-up old man and let him drive.

Was very fun to write this with @WillManidis for @every and see the thesis play out at Lafayette over the past year. Very long AI transformation in the lower middle market.
with "ai transformation" in the news, republishing a piece that @johnkennedy_4 wrote in early 2024 about the new software economy.

my most sapir-whorf take is that everyone would be psychologically healthier if we referred to emotions like we say "it is raining" instead of "I am sad"

Young builders of the world: Really want to come to SF? But can't afford to come to SF? Please read on. I'm going to sponsor two of you to visit this summer. I've been promoting San Francisco as THE place that those who wish to build the future should be. But I've got a couple sad replies from people saying it's financially out of reach. I get it. I could barely afford to come here in 2011—I bought my flights and initial accommodation with a €2k bank loan. So to pay off my guilt for pumping SF, and to support those younger versions of me who can't even get a loan, I'm going to sponsor two young builders to come here for 90 days starting 1 June. They'll get: - CHEAP return flights from your home and back - CHEAP Bay Area accommodation - A $50 daily stipend… you'll need to like cooking :) - One meeting with an immigration attorney to advise on your options - One meeting with me for a high five and a pep talk :) This will be hard. It's NOT a holiday. It's definitely not meant to be. But you'll get an exposure to the greatest city for builders on earth and what you do from there will be up to you. To apply: - mail: [email protected] - include your name, your age, your location, and ONE line on why you want to come here - confirm that there's no way you could afford to come here by your own means Please don't mail more than once. We may request a short interview. We'll choose people who we think can make the most of it + somewhat at random. The deadline for applications is this Friday :) To everyone not applying, I'd appreciate a retweet or otherwise a share of this message. I'll announce the winners next week and send some updates through the summer on how it all goes.

I don’t know enough about the guy’s ideas or actions to make a call. But as far as speech-making, constructing slogans, preparing to rally people… Undoubtedly among the best I’ve ever seen.

If it’s true that they torched an $80 billion company cause they thought they were too close to building God, then that’s orders of magnitude the most punk rock thing I’ve ever heard of.

We evolved to live in small tribes and now live outside of our natural habitat, in an advanced civilization. One effect of this mismatch is that there are a bunch of things that feel dangerous to us that aren't actually dangerous, leading us to be way too risk averse. Like: - Asking someone out on a date - Trying something new even though you'll suck at it at first - Quitting your job to start a company or try a career in the arts - Putting your real voice out there on controversial topics For primates living in a small tribe, rejection, embarrassment, failure, and criticism posed actual material dangers. These things are not dangerous today, but our software hasn't been updated. So we miss out on living our best life, hiding in the 1-4 zone of the danger scale. In a world of overly risk averse people, the epiphany that the 4-7 zone is actually a safe place to play is a superpower.

So, even though I make insane faces and look like I’m always breaking into an opening number of an (off-off-off) Broadway show, and (occasionally) throw things at the (unsuspecting) audience, and don’t always line up my verbs with the right nouns, the (forgiving) people at WebSummit have invited me back to speak about how design can help us transform our futures for the better. Websummit.com for registration. I hope you can join us in Lisbon in November. Just remember to, like, duck. – at Manhattan, NY
