A new study by Prof. Marc-Antoine Longpré (@ma_longpre) and alumna Samantha Tramontano (@samtramrox) in @NatureGeosci suggests that magma composition could drive tremors during volcanic eruptions. Learn more: gc.cuny.edu/news/new-study-s… @AMNH
Check out our paper just out in @NatureGeosci on petrological monitoring of the 2021 eruption on La Palma and the link between melt composition and volcanic tremor rdcu.be/d5Q6w
For NYC students thinking of majoring in Earth and environmental sciences...Our Bachelor of Science in Geology at Queens College is the only degree offered in the city that qualifies for the NY State Professional Geologist license...check it out! :-) qc.cuny.edu/academics/sees/
Excited to share our latest study on the 1730s Timanfaya eruption on Lanzarote. Based on fieldwork and geochemistry, we reconstruct eruptive style over time, showing that the first stage of the eruption was explosive. Read more: link.springer.com/epdf/10.10…
Supervolcanic kudos to @samtramrox for successfully defending her PhD thesis today! Fantastic job! Congratulations Dr. Tramontano :-)

We have loved having you all here with us at #iavcei2023 in Rotorua! As we start going our separate ways, whether your attending post-conference workshops or fieldtrips, doing some sightseeing, or making your way home, Haere tū atu, hoki tū mai (have a safe trip)!
My direct NYC-Auckland flight has turned into a Newark-San Fran-Sydney-Auckland marathon! #IAVCEIstranded Should be in Rotorua in time for the mid-conference the field trip!
IAVCEI goers — anyone driving from Auckland to Rotorua in the morning of Monday Jan. 30th? Would love to join the ride! 😀
We are hiring a Lecturer in Geology, please spread the word: cuny.jobs/queens-ny/lecturer…
Checked out the vent area of the 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption today! Thanks to @involcan for taking us there! #fumeroles #volcanicbombs
It does appear that Cumbre Vieja has grown at such rate throughout its shield-building stage...If you are interested to read more, we discuss these numbers in this paper: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
That would make sense. In turn, the long repose time, long run-up time and lack of shallow magma reservoir may ultimately all be tied to Cumbre Vieja’s low magma supply rate, which is only about a hundredth of Kilauea’s over timescales of centuries.
