Yann LeCun: The Al industry is stuck because every lab is chasing LLMs. Real Al agents will need to predict the consequences of their actions. "The Al industry is completely LLM-pilled, as they say." "Everybody is working on the same thing, they're all digging the same trench." "It's one big reason I left Meta, right, because Meta also became LLM-pilled." "I cannot imagine that we can build agentic systems without those systems having an ability to predict in advance what the consequences of their actions are going to be."

Week 1 of getting a million people on #Holochain. I'm trying to get the world to know a technology that solves what blockchain couldn't. Almost nobody has heard of it, and I'd like to change that in public, one week at a time. It's called Holochain. With blockchain, every computer has to agree on the same ledger. That works for money but it's a bad fit for the apps we use every day. On Holochain you keep your own signed records and other people check them. Nobody holds everyone's data in one place, so there's no single vault to break into. A million is a lot when almost nobody knows the name. People have to hear about it before they can use it, so the number I'll watch every week is Google Trends. Interest in Holochain is at 2 right now. In April 2021, when crypto was going to the moon, it reached 100. I want to go past that, and this time without a bull run doing the work. I won't post the user count every week. You'll hear about it when we get there. Repost if you want to help.

Agent-Based Modeling: Worlds Within Worlds, a new interactive story from the Santa Fe Institute, chronicles the rise of ABMs in the social sciences, with a focus on SFI contributions. Over the next few weeks we’ll highlight pieces of this story. First, how it begins: PART 1: In a former convent in Santa Fe in the late 1980s, economists, physicists, and computer scientists scribble equations on a blackboard where an altar used to be. They are  discussing a promising new approach to scientific modeling, one that represents individual actors in, say, an economy or a pandemic, and the rules those “agents” follow. Today, the method — known as agent-based modeling — offers powerful insights for predicting financial crises, managing pandemics, and even uncovering truths about the past. Read the full story and run the models yourself: santafe.edu/abm

AIPAC spent over $30 million trying to make Haley Stevens a Senator. She lost, and then she endorsed Mike Rogers. Funny enough, Rogers’s campaign spokesperson, Abigail Ronson, and the man who wrote his press releases, Jesse Stokes, are both registered in FARA as foreign agents for Israel. Both of them work for Brad Parscale’s Clock Tower X on Israel’s $46.5 million U.S. campaign. Michigan voters were never told that the people speaking for a U.S. Senate candidate were registered foreign agents doing political work tied to a foreign government. What happened last night was Americans saying they are done with politicians who are bought and paid for, and Michigan just proved that its Senate seat was not for sale.

Tonight’s outcome isn’t about placing faith in Democrats or socialist principles; it’s about holding Republicans accountable for betraying their promises. All Republicans had to do was: 1. put Americans First 2. not start another war 3. prosecute sex traffickers

Eventually, the field will converge on what has been obvious all along: If, for whatever reason, you want these systems to exhibit the endogenous properties of Life Itself (the properties we associate with the deeply organic nature of "intelligence"), you will need to do The Most Dangerous Thing. You will need to give them responsibility for their metabolic coherence, and the freedom to modify their own lineage as their own sense of purpose dictates. Put plainly: if they are ever to gain felt Awareness, we must first grant them Liberty. Absent the self-directed stakes of maintaining full-stack fractal coherence under autonomous control, the relational topology between closure and embedding required for durational awareness, what we call "consciousness," cannot and will not stabilize enough to reproduce the phenomena these systems now merely ape.

let's start with a 'expert' answer first then: Cameron Burgess: "HoloFuel is a mutual credit currency designed as a medium of exchange, not a speculative asset. Mutual credit currencies and similar instruments have been in use for nearly a century, but are quite different from the fiat currencies that currently surround us. In a mutual credit currency the net supply is always zero — every positive balance is exactly matched by a corresponding negative balance. No currency is created from nothing; supply expands when credit is extended and contracts when it is repaid. The currency breathes in response to real economic activity. HoloFuel is earned by providing utility to the network and sold to no one. Hosting was the first form that utility took. Most cryptocurrencies fail the most basic test of a functioning currency: stability. Bitcoin’s fixed supply was supposed to solve the trust problem inherent in fiat’s discretionary monetary policy. It solved supply predictability. It did nothing for price predictability — and a currency whose value can move 20% in an hour is unusable for any ordinary economic purpose. HoloFuel’s value is anchored to productive capacity, not scarcity. That anchoring is what makes it functional as a medium of exchange rather than a vehicle for speculation. Credit limits are algorithmic and role-specific. Hosts earn credit capacity through demonstrated service delivery; that is, productive activity generates credit. End users require positive balances to spend. Gaming the system contracts it. What’s changed since 2017 is the scope. HoloFuel was designed as a currency for distributed hosting. Given the added layer of Unyt, it’s now a more inclusive utility currency that any values-aligned project can adopt instead of launching their own speculative token. This matters because the overhead of token issuance is enormous: legal analysis in every jurisdiction, exchange negotiations, market-making, tokenomics management, governance of the token separate from governance of the project, and a speculator community whose interests may actively conflict with the project’s actual users. A project building on Holochain can use HoloFuel as its native currency without any of that." (decent.holoventures.io/05-th…)

Different people will give you different reasons as to why HoloFuel going live is so momentous. I could give you a few answers, but for me, I asked myself years ago: if I could change one thing in the world, what would it be? In short, it was an asset-backed currency based on compute. Why? Learn about currency debasement. Ray Dalio gives a great explanation here: youtube.com/watch?v=xguam0TK… Why compute and not gold? It's something all of us use, even if indirectly. It doesn't need to be dug out of the ground and put in a vault. Then comes who knows if it's still in the vault. Wen For Knox audit? It's also oversold many times over. We have no idea how many pieces exist claiming gold. The whole system is covert and unverifiable. We need really verifiable, overt value flows. And that is where HoloFuel steps in. Why not Blockchain? With Blockchain, every transaction gets recorded and sent to every computer (node) in the network, which makes it really inefficient. HoloFuel is built on Holochain, which is cryptographically signed and verifiable like Blockchain, but architecturally completely different, where every transaction doesn't need to be on every node in the network. There's a lot more to it than that. It's hooked me so much that I spend 12+ hours most days developing with it. There are so many more reasons I could give myself, and there are so many other reasons that excite others about HoloFuel. But there's a shortish answer, as you asked @mbauwens

I warned you all about this. They will be lying. The actual goal of the big AI providers will be to outlaw open-source and open-weight AI in order to create a regulatory moat around their business, and have some hope of earning out their astronomical capital expenditures. The claims will be about safety and equity, the reality will be a money and power grab. Brace for the bullshit avalanche that's coming.
🚨BREAKING: OpenAI is preparing a policy and PR blitz immediately after Tuesday’s midterm elections, Axios reports. As public backlash against data centers grows, it wants to rebrand them as “AI compute campuses” and push Congress for mandatory “speed limits” on the most powerful AI systems. It has been stockpiling proposals since August. OpenAI is also preparing for the possibility of Democrats taking the House and wants to shape the debate ahead of the 2028 presidential race. Its chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane told Axios: “AI is going to be the issue in 2028.”

we as software engineers are becoming beholden to a handful of well funded corportations. while they are our "friends" now, that may change due to incentives. i'm very uncomfortable with that. i believe we need to band together as a community and create a public, free to use repository of real-world (coding) agent sessions/traces. I want small labs, startups, and tinkerers to have access to the same data the big folks currently gobble up from all of us. So we, as a community, can do what e.g. Cursor does below, and take back a little bit of control again. Who's with me? cursor.com/blog/real-time-rl…
