Regarding federal preemption, @chopraftc advises us to first get the federal privacy law we need and then talk about how it fits in a multi-state framework, not the other way around. #DataPrivacySummit
Marshall Erwin (@mozilla) notes that many transparency tools are geared towards "superusers" rather than regular users. Absolutely true, but letting *anyone* access data can help inform the entire debate. E.g. Max Schrems. #dataprivacysummit

Hot damn! This isn't rhetorically nice but overly open-ended lip-service about the need to regulate facial recognition technology. @BradSmi & the @microsoft team gave the issue deep consideration & proposed real, meaningful reforms. cc: @hartzog, @Matt_Cagle, @snowjake
Very interesting: @microsoft GC @BradSmi just followed up his July blog post suggesting it's time to regulate facial recognition with a new post that includes specific proposals. Appreciate the prioritization of this issue and look forward to digging in. blogs.microsoft.com/on-the-i…

White House correspondents represent the public. Their job is to ask hard questions, not to be polite company.
It is unacceptable for the president to expel a reporter, Jim Acosta, for doing his job aggressively. The White House should reverse this decision immediately.

We all know this, but it's worth restating:
The President fired the Attorney General for following ethics rules that required the Attorney General to recuse himself from overseeing an investigation into the President's campaign and ultimately the President himself.

There’s currently an organized bot effort to discourage people from voting. Among their “arguments” is that voting machines are all “rigged”.
Hogwash.
I’m one of the computer scientists who discovered these voting system problems. And I vote, because it matters. So should you.

The U.S. Military is the most fearsome fighting force the world's ever known. That we're amassing thousands at the border to "repel" desperate women and children 100s of miles away is an insult - to those in uniform, to the intelligence of the American people, and to our values.
