Talarico: Alla är religiösa!
One of the more exciting parts of this election - among many - is the return of a religious left.

Many years ago, an acquaintance described meeting an ex-President, someone known for his charm and charisma. He still had a lot of political power and was also of course wealthy. She wasn’t a political person, but said she immediately felt his “animal magnetism” and was very drawn to him. People will worship those with power, charisma, and intelligence. They may even be faithful and self-sacrificing in their devotion to such people. But it’s not an agape sort of love. It’s not a love of goodness. It’s more like a compulsion. I think this is a major reason God “hides” himself. God could easily overwhelm us with his power, magnificence, and beauty, but he doesn’t desire that kind of worship - he desires real love from us. Life on this little rock in space, where we experience a multitude of hardships, where devotion to God doesn’t mean people gawk at us enviously as we tour the universe in his entourage, is the only opportunity we have to love God freely. To choose him even when it doesn’t materially benefit us. To choose him without the compulsion of the pure electric power of his presence. To choose him for no other reason than that we desire goodness. I remind myself of this every time I feel God is far away. His divine hiddenness reflects the sort of relationship he wants with us.

The gospel’s call is not "come to church," but "come to Christ"—and when we do, church happens.

The Word did not become a proposition to debate. The Word became a child to cradle. Not a thesis to defend, but a story to enter— wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger, waiting for you to draw near. The Word became a story you could walk into and make your own. Merry Christmas Eve. The night the argument ended and the story began. #ChristmasEve2025

The wonderful Dolly Parton made a choice not to spend her fortune on space travel, but instead invested in writing checks and making commitments to put over 150 million books into the hands of children. Now that’s what you call farsighted!

Whenever Christianity is co-opted to support violence, misogyny or racism it loses its very soul. Here’s the letter I & a group of friends wrote over the last few days, was signed by senior church leaders across denominations & published by The Sunday Times & Sunday Mirror today.

Stalin had a solution for the “problem” of people he disagreed with or who strayed from the official line. His mantra was chillingly simple: “No person, no problem.” The answer to every challenge was elimination—gulags, purges, massacres, Holodomor. And while he “personalized” every idea, he could still say as he extinguished you: “Nothing personal.” And yet, as Geoffrey Roberts reminds us in Stalin’s Library: A Dictator and His Books (2022), Stalin was “willing to learn from even the most despised opponents”—sometimes even from the very people he had ordered killed. A mind open to insights, a heart closed to mercy. Jesus’ response was the exact inversion. His unspoken mantra: “Each person, God’s image.” Even those who not only disagreed with him but sought to kill him, his response was . . . Not elimination, but embrace. Not erasure, but restoration. Not assassination, but argument. Not death, but life. And to those who hated him enough to kill him, he prayed: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” We live in a culture that aestheticizes violence even as it anesthetizes us to its horror. All the more reason to name the difference between Stalin and Jesus: Stalin: “No person, no problem.” Jesus: “Every person, God’s presence.” Stalin: “Erase the person, erase the problem.” Jesus: “Embrace the person, reveal God’s image.” Stalin: “No person, no problem.” Jesus: “Erase none, embrace all.” Stalin: “No person, no problem.” Jesus: “Where one is lost, all is broken.” #EveryPersonParable #ImagoDei #EmbraceNotErase #EveryPersonGodsImage #Stalinist
